Les Penguins s’affrontent à Buffalo où ils ont fait leurs débuts avec leurs maillots rétro inversés pour la première fois. En 1ère période, Jason Zucker a mis les Penguins au tableau en premier avec un but et célèbre avec un salut emblématique de Jagr. Ce salut était particulièrement approprié car ils reprennent «The Robo Pen» sur leurs nouveaux chandails, rendus célèbres par Mario Lemieux et Jaromir Jagr tout au long des années 1990. En 2e période, Josh Archibald a renforcé l’avance des Penguins au début du deuxième quart. Buffalo a réussi à s’inscrire au tableau avec un but de JJ Peterka avec seulement 1:09 à jouer dans la période. La 3e période a bien commencé lorsque Jake Guentzel a trouvé le fond du filet à seulement 0:08 de seconde du début de la période. Le but de Jake a été suivi de buts de Tage Thompson et Victor Olofsson, donnant aux Sabres une avance de 4-3. Dans une tentative de reprendre le match, les Penguins ont retiré Casey DeSmith du filet et Kyle Okposo et Victor Olofsson ont marqué des buts dans un filet vide pour les Sabres.
