Actually, mathematically, the odds ain't really that impressive. You have ~24 skaters on each team, grouped in about seven groups, shall we say, and the matchups are group v group, so, it should be fairly easy to see, two 'matching' individuals are almost certainly going to be on the ice at the same time often enough during 60 minutes, because it's groups arrayed against each other, not individuals.
Seriously, mathematically, it's quite unremarkable.
Not to mention the Joseph Joseph high stick penalty last night.
