Personally I thought he was playing pretty well overall last year. He just couldn't stay healthy. At this point I think the question is more, where is the playing time gonna come from? Who do you realistically not play so that he can? Is there even a spot?
I feel there's potentially a future for him still. He's a decent bottom-six guy who seems to have developed some defensive ability. It's not where I'd have liked to see him by this time in his career, but here we are. With that said, I do feel his time is coming to an end here, because bottom-six guys is something we don't have a shortage of. He could still make the team out of camp, and I'm sure they'll give Z every opportunity to showcase why another team should trade for him. Stevie seems to, at the very least, try to do right by the players.
Just another one of KH's swing-and-a-miss picks from the final years of his tenure with us.
I think Zadina could be a good NHL hockey player, maybe he just needs a change of scenery. The problem is that no one wants him. Yeah his cap hit is manageable, but hey teams would rather spend that on their prospects, than on a possible reclamation project. Maybe he needs to go back to his homeland and play here and get some confidence there. I think he is suffering from a lack of confidence. I think the skill is there, I just don't think he has any confidence in himself.
I really wanted Zadina to reach what we all hoped he could be. That being said. I see nothing wrong with the tweet you showed.
If you listen to the Yzerman's interview. He talks about Zadina and then right after he talks about a few players in a row and how hard they work day in and day out…. I remember thinking how he didn't say that about Zadina…
Surprised he didn't get picked up on waivers
I unlike most Wings fans saw he was a bust fairly early. He's just invincible on ice. You rarely even realize he's playing. He looks just like he got thrown in straight from the beer league out there. There's no saving him IMO but if he really commits and uses this as motivation for the future I wouldn't discount him pulling a Valeri Nichushkin one day🤷♂
I remember Sens fans were mad that they took Brady instead of this guy after that draft 😅
I don’t think that Zadina is really worth trying for anymore. We’ve wasted too much time on him and although he could turn into a better player with time, how much time do we really have to give him. There are other prospects ready to play for us and willing to step up, obviously Zadina can’t handle it. So realistically we should move on from him.
He really has not panned out well. I think no NHL team will take a look at him and he’ll end up going back to Europe to play there. He could still have good career just over there and not in the NHL.
Honestly seeing Zadina finally succeed with the Wings would be absolutly the best story in the NHL so far
He’s a bust
Net filler 😂😂
another top prospect ruined by steve yzerbum 😭
Zadina threatened to fill the Habs' net with pucks (for passing him up at the draft). Now the threat is gone.
Zadina does everything right except score. He either misses the net or hits the goalie in the chest. IMO, I think he is too far behind in his development and now he has to compete with the younger prospects. I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see him becoming a goal scorer, at least not as a Red Wing.
I am tired of seeing Zadina's picture and hearing about him I hope he spends his last 2 years of his contract in GR or on another team. he is an AHL player not an NHL player.
He has 2 choices now.. Play and score, or his career is over in hockey! Pretty bad when you can't be given away
Zadina was never an elite skater, not dynamic enough to exploit space or become physical enough to go into the boards and battle for pucks. Or be a pest agitator that teams hated to match up against. Yet in the NHL you can survive with deficiencies, as long as you have a dangerous shot selection. But Zarina's shot selection did not grow over the years as he targeted center mass on every opposing goalie he faced
He is a bust and every NHL team has selected a bust player in the first round even #1 overall.
The trend will never end
As a Wings fan, I'll have to say that Zadina will be in Europe sooner rather than later. He can't find open ice in NHL. His shot is poor, no deception. Works hard but the play dies on his stick more often than not. I am not surprised about this at all. Lot's of Wings fans were in denial for a long time.
Grand rapids should be fun to watch ay
Dude. Yzerman did NOT draft Filip Zadina. Check your facts please. Yzerman's first draft pick as Detroit GM was Moritz Seider. Zadina and Veleno were drafted by the Kenny Holland crew before Yzerman returned to the D in April of 2019…Zadina was drafted in 2018.
Yzerman and the red wings are considering terminating Zadina's contract tomorrow by placing him on unconditional waivers to terminate his contract.
This will either light a fire in him or extinguish any confidence he had left.
Weird how some players seem to think that once they get drafted the work is done and they have earned the right to play in the NHL. And on the opposite spectrum, some players actually start improving and understand that they are privileged to be there, and that their careers are in their hands. Zadina seems to fall in the first category, the talent is there, but talent will not be enough in the NHL, even McDavid works hard to get results.
Imagine if MTL had drafted him and this would have happened. This kinda proves that its not only « development » issues. Or it proves that other teams also have development issues? I tend to think that some players are just less receptive to adapting and learning what it takes to be a pro vs relying only on talent. In the juniors, you can be a star based on talent alone, not so much in the NHL
I felt he was always overconfident and that he stop leaning and thought he could be good based on his skills but i always thought sence we drafted him i thought he was a hit or miss guy and kh made the mistake there were way better players there then him even when he was drafted he now a bottom 6 guys watching guy we could have had be stars is sad hopefully he make it one day but if this is it for him he can be a good player for a 3 line guy he will be but i think it best to let him walk and just take the lose anyway steve y doesn't have to justify he didn't pick him
He’s no good
Well, sounds like Zadinas contract is being terminated, so the answer to that second question is a definitive no. As for whether or not he pans out, it depends on his attitude. So far, he's said he will, under no conditions, play in the AHL. Unfortunately, I don't think that's an option for him. He's not a consistent roster player in the NHL. At least, not yet. If he were willing to spend a few years in the A and work on his game and grow, then yeah, I could definitely see a scenario where he becomes a decent middle to top six player later. But if he isn't willing to do that, he's gonna very quickly find himself in the Czech or Slovak leagues. Either way, I suspect that Zadina is in for a very shocking wake up call when he becomes a UFA.

Nice video
I still see the potential even now that we kno he’s pretty much gone so no biasses
If zadina was getting pay 775k Yeah I can see a team claiming him but his cap may seem small but team are going to take on an change on zadina without getting something in return
Zadina should go to Europe to play. He's just not cut out for the NHL. Doesn't play the modern NHL game.
He doesn’t report to GR and the Wings terminate his contract. Best scenario for Steveie,he couldn’t buy him out and he didn’t want to pay him $1.8+mil in the AHL.
Zadina is a victim of his attitude and a toxic fan base.
What he needs is a change of scenery, and maybe that will help him get back on track to being an nhl player.
His best option, and likely only option, is to stay in detroit and fight tooth and nail for what you think you deserve. It will take a lot of work, but I think he could do it. All up to him
Try thinking in terms of Formenton for Zadina. If nobody is "checking" on conditions of Formenton, maybe he's been living on Ding Dongs and Ho hos ???
I’ve been saying for past 3 years we should trade him.
Not everyone is an NHL player.
You definitely made it sound like you thought Yzerman drafted him. This was another Holland bust. Hollands only first round draft pick that really made it was larkin.
