No problem. Nobody is trying to forget or slight Bourdon. Cole is a veteran and has many years experience.
I almost cried when Luc died. I really thought he would be our first super star defenseman. Even Daughty thought he would be something else. And better than him. But I do not have a problem. Just make the team proud wearing those numbers.

I think a respectful amount of time has passed to let the number be used again. I have no issue with Ian Cole this year and players in the future wearing it.

Personally, I don't really have a problem with Cole wearing #28, but I'm a little surprised the Canucks ok'd it. I would think Allvin would have said, "Look, #28 was Bourdon's number…no one's worn it since he died tragically. It might be best to pick another number to avoid fan backlash". As a player trying to make a good first impression with the fans, maybe a controversy isn't the best way to go about it. Happy anniversary to you and Gail, Clay! And thanks for posting!

It's unfortunate to say that the Canucks have a few of these unofficially retired jerseys.
Numbers, 11, 28, 37 and 38 worn respectively by Wayne Maki, Luc Bourdon, Rick Rypien, and Pavol Dmitra.
I think it's a sign of closure from these unfortunate passings.
I know that there was an issue when Messier took number 11.
I'm sure seeking blessings from the next of kin would be a nice gesture in the times to come.
If anything, it's awkward to see someone else in #53.

So talking about when we became Canucks fans- you said a lot became fans in the 2010-2011 run- I actually became a fan at age 12 during the 94 run! I was such a big fan of Pavel Bure!! Any way- my dad was in the army and we were moving…. Driving from Alaska to Alabama… on the drive through Canada my brother and I became huge Canucks fans and huge hockey fans in general because the playoffs were on in the hotel rooms every night. Being kids we became huge fans of the Canucks.
