I wouldn't fucking give Toronto a discount either. And I'm from Toronto fans are so fucking abusive. I would want extra too Especially for the abuse that I would have to put up with. This is a business he did not come to Toronto to kiss ass. And if he signs 5 years, hes already did. How many years in Toronto? So by the time hes done, hes done 15 years in total. That's a fucking lifetime, what more do you want from the guy his underwear?
No way is Matthews leaving… Toronto must open their wallets.
13-15 million a year? Lmao that would be whacked. He's Already overpaid.
Who cares. I mean like tell me about the deal after it’s done, really I’m not even that interested in that, I just want to watch them play. All this fanboying is honestly sickening.
The smart thing to do would be trade him right now and get an insane haul but it would hurt Marner and Keefe’s feelings so they won’t.
Trade Matthews NOW!!!!
Eventually, the NHL is going to do what the NBA did and cap contracts at 5 years and make it so that only a player’s current team can offer the most AAV. The league is (generally) healthier when markets that havent sniffed a Stanley Cup (i.e. Toronto) can retain its home grown talent. Auston Matthews is the NHL’s version of Bradley Beal or Damian Lillard.
The only way in hell I will ever be okay with a number over 13 is if it's for eight years. If this guy really wants 13+ and on a shorter deal, genuinely, from the bottom of my heart, please fuck off and go play somewhere else. I'm sick of watching other teams get the full eight-year buy in from their franchise players at discount numbers while watching the Leafs get robbed left right and center of every penny they own. Enough. Sign long term, sign at a discount, I'm good with either – but if he seriously tries to pull something like 3×14 I hope everyone in SBA boos him off the ice.
After a rebuild like the Leafs' had a few years back, there's a few seasons that are your "window of opportunity". When your team's odds are solid to win cups. We saw it with the Pens, the Blackhawks etc. I don't know if that window will still be open for Toronto in 5years time. It's already been opened since ~2016-2017. Even the greatest dynasties in the game rarely kept it opened for more 10years or more..
So yeah there's obviously the money. But a longer contract is a safer investment for a player. Maybe he just doesn't want to be stuck there if the team ends up taking a dive in a fee years.
I hope he bolts
there is no way Id give matthews the same or more money than mcdavid ! as an amatuer G.M. there is no way id give an 8 year contract out unless the player is lemeiux, gretzky, or jagr ! the nhl landscape is littered with bad long term contracts over the years that really did a lot of damage to a teams prospects . If the return was right the leafs would do well to trade mathews !
In 2 more years the cap will be up about $8M and JT’s contract will be cut by AT LEAST $5M if he even gets resigned, so a shorter contract makes sense and rly everyone should be, look at all the 1-3 year deals from the UFA’s this off-season
So now Mathews is in control the team can’t say no because he will walk to Arizona that will be happy to give him all the money. It’s smart by Mathews but still very shady
The level of professionalism in your videos is impressive. You have a polished and well-produced content.
He'll sign only a 3 year extension. Probably for about 12 million a year.
Great video bro! One thing, you mention that Matthews isn't the type of guy to take a discount to stay with toronto. My perspective is why should he? Second best in the league and in his absolute prime, he should get what he's worth, which is TOP dollar. Although I do agree that he should consider a lower price point if it means 1-2 more power forwards / strong defense / goalie, which leads to increased chance at cup
They can sign him and nylander but what is the point when they cant win with them. Ya think they might be able to figure out that they need sum defensive help.
he not worth more than he's being paid RIGHT NOW. trade em.
Honestly believe matthews deserves a pretty big pay cut, guy has been making bank for lack luster results the last few years, especially post season
I don't get it …. Leafs should have traded him when they had the chance. No way he deserves to be the highest paid player in the NHL. You pay that kind of money for superstars that can lead. Matthews is not a leader… never will be.
They should trade this guy, they are not winning, try something else. Maybe fire the management along with all the scouts too, they obviously aren’t winners either.
Matthews doesnt worth more than already overpaid $11M. MacKinnon is far better player., even cap increasing not worth more than MacKinnon.
So what if I'm the Leafs I'm good and the trade off will be no no-trade clause and it will get done
A 3-5 year @ 14 per, why would he want or deserve anything less. After 3-5, he will get the teams 8 years deal @ 16 mil with a higher cap.
I know McDavid signed his contract years ago, but how does these guys have the nerve to ask to get paid more than him is beyond me. And why would team pay it is just dumb. McDavid almost got twice the points as Matthews and Matthews wants more than McDavid? LOL
Yeah he is still coming home next home year no way the Leafs will have cap for him
It came out about a week or 2 ago that he wanted to take a lower salary to improve the team
He is looking for a tradeable contract. He likes it in Toronto and thinks theybhave a chance vut in the end its going to be the same syndrome that affects all Canadian teams. Americans dont want to win in Canada, they want to win the Stanley Cup with an American team. Its Tom Borrasso Syndrome. When will Canadian GMs ever learn?
Get all you can while you can hockey is the most violent sport of the big four and pays the least amount of money, if you offered that amount to a MLB player he wou laugh in your face
not worth the money … yet wants to be the highest paid player league…. But says he wants to win the cup… I call bullshit. finished 3rd on his own team in scoring,,, 22 in the league ,,,, hes a joke
had the chance to move him … had all the power lost it all on July 1st… Now hes screwed himself. Treliving and the leafs will get what they deserve… Remeber when Tavares said he wasn;t leaving the Isles only to leave the Isles .. Words mean nothing … $$$$ speaks volumes
There are a few ignorant Leaf 'fans' who relentlessly compare what some US based teams pay their star players, to what the Leafs pay theirs. They are simply unable to grasp that the salary structures are not comparable. The tax structure in Canada is more punitive than almost any US based team & in particular, teams based in states with low, or zero state income tax. If you are being paid 9.5M per year in Florida (zero tax) that is roughly equivalent to a Leaf making 11M in net after tax dollars. It is astounding how many Leaf/Dubas bashers are unaware of this, despite the fact that it is easily proveable, or maybe they do know, but it doesn't help their bullshit one-sided narrative.
The other thing that drives me nuts is the constant crap from some morons as to how Leaf management didn't 'make' Matthews, et al all sign 8 year deals. Are you that f*cking stupid? You cannot 'force' your star player to 'take' an 8 year deal if they don't want one. I can assure you that both MacKinnon & Draisaitl, to name just 2 star centres, both regretted taking 7 & 8 year contracts coming out of their ELCs. The reason? Draisaitl signed his RFA deal in 2017 & in the 2nd year, he went right off in production (105 pts). Instantly underpaid & for another 6 years. He took 8 years for his own security & Edmonton gambled he would out-perform the contract & has he ever. He's a UFA July 2025. Had he signed for 5 yrs like Matthews, he would've been a UFA last year & I guarantee he would not be playing for 8.5M aav & Edmonton's cap issues would be way worse than they already are. Even with a 'discount' he'd likely be at 12.5M aav, minimum.
MacKinnon, was a similar situation with his best ELC year being only 24 goals & 63 pts (Draisaitl was 77). In 2016, the yr before Draisaitl, he took the security at 7 yrs x 6.3M. He also went off in the 2nd year of his new deal for 39G & 97 pts. A massive underpay vs performance. Last July, eligible for an extension, he ultimately signed for 12.6M x 8. Very low state income tax in Colorado, so the equivalent for Matthews, who is paying tax in Canada (13% for him in Ontario alone), would be roughly 14.2M. MacKinnon could have demanded more (14M easily), but took less with a pandemic stalled cap to help his team out, despite being vastly underpaid for 6 years.
Rantanen, being a RW, is the closest comp to Marner. He signed his RFA deal for 9.25M x 6 yrs, NOT 8 yrs. 9.25M is about equal to Marner's deal in net tax dollars. I can assure you Rantanen's not re-signing for 9.25M as a UFA. He will likely be close to MacKinnon, unless he doesn't take a 'discount', in which case he could be at 13M+ by next July. He will likely sign for 11.5M x 4 or 5 yrs. Sebastian Aho is another 'star centre' who would NOT sign an 8 yr contract out of his ELC (best yr 83 pts). He signed for 5 years. He's a UFA next July unless Carolina can extend him soon. He's basically a point-a-game guy for the last 5 years, so very similar to Tavares. His new deal will likely fall somehere between 9.5 & 10.5M in a state with a low flat state income tax. So stop whining that Matthews & Marner are overpaid, or 'greedy', because they are not.
