Who is going to teach Matthews, Marner, Nylander and JT how to play playoff hockey? I don't care what you pay these guys if they cannot play playoff hockey they are worthless. Period.
3-4 million/year too much, but I'm fine with that. Now he has all the motivation he needs to do even less this season. Might be Toronto's best player, but barely top 10 in the league, maybe not even that. Good day to not be a Leafs fan, this is a terrible contract for them.

They just put Leon Draisaitl at a minimum of $13.5 million a season as Matthews is no where near as consistent or reliable. They way over paid him and that sucks for the entire league as the cap is hardly moving! Thank you Toronto for fucking the entire NHL by continuing to overpay your top players!

Matthews is THE peice you build around for a cup team. Other peices can come and go (even big ones).
Regular season: He's amazing.
Playoffs: It didnt always show on the board, but he showed some somen off that edge- some of that battle- that the best playoff preformers have.
He got in dirty areas in front of the net, he won possession on the boards a ton, he found space to create scoring chances against the hottest playoff team, (Flordia was still rolling at that stage), he wasnt being a push over-the man fought Stamkos), and he played a strong overall game.
Those posts he got late against Flordia, that chance in OT all alone in front? He's going to come back next year firey. There are some big playoff moments coming for for Austin Matthews and the Leafs.
