Don’t miss the real story, the leafs signed Matthews, arguably one of the best players in the league and perhaps the greatest leaf of all time. The leafs are going to be a powerhouse, the additions of Domi and Bertuzzi and Martin Jones are looking very good right now, and they don’t need to sign Willy right now, they can wait until the end of the year and see where the cap is and say okay Willy this is where we’re at.

Kippers premise that the leafs could have had Matthews for 11.6 for 8 years 4 years ago is fundamentally flawed – if Matthews signed an 8 year deal back then it would’ve been over 13 per anyway (as per Chris Johnston) – the leafs came out ahead with Auston doing what he’s done on these deals
I don't get ppl complaining about the length of contract…. By the end of the new deal… He would have been here for 11 years. Plus if he's still playing well we can resign him.

Auston needs to be a top 10 player in the league and a top 3 centre.
The term is perfect! You have your best asset locked in for 5 years and you will have him during his prime. After the contract ends, the team has the option to sign him again if he is still playing at a high level or walk away if they feel he is on the decline or if there are better options available.
An 8 year deal would have had a higher AAV to account for cap increase. This way the team gets a lower AAV and Mathews can renegotiate for more money at 31 when the team has a better idea of how he's going to age.
Toronto pays too much for point scoring and cant find guys who win big and important games.They need a deeper team.

The problem that Bourne doesn’t seem to want to understand,,, term , now you open the door Nylander saying I’ll take 9.5 for 3 years , then Marner says I’ll take 12.5 for 4 to 5 years ,,, the salary cap going up is gone , you still haven’t addressed your weak D core

He was never signing $13.25 over 8. It would have been 15 or 16 over 8. The cap is projected to go up, Auston would have factored that into his AAV number.
Only Leaf fans and media can complain in one breadth about an aging Tavares and the number being too high, and in the same breadth complain we aren't signing stars for double digits into their mid to late 30's …
8 year contracts are terrible for team and player. The players messed up last cba. They could have used accepting 5 year contracts as a bargining chip.
