As a Hockey fan and not a Leafs fan I think this was a terrible signing and the biggest reason I have behind this is the stupidity of the No Movement Clause, Matthews hasn't produced in Toronto by even making it to the conference finals that I would never have offered him a no movement clause. I am also a strong believe that the No Movement Clause was one of the worst things they introduced to contracts, Player gets paid and then player coasts under contract until contract year again and you can't move him because the player has the choice.
Kypreos saying Marner will ask for more money because he's better than Matthews, what the hell are you talking about. If marner wants $13 million he's obviously gone.
More than likely if Matthews is ever going to be on a Stanley Cup Winning team it will during his prime and thats the next 4yrs. If he don't get it done in Toronto, odds just get worse that he'll ever win one. IMO.

No one else would give him this money, either time. If he scores 60 and 100 for the next five years his goal and point numbers per million dollars spent is tiny.

Nylander was more valuable than Tavares last year . He drove play more and was better 5 on 5. He should get at least 11 using Leaf salary logic.

This contract is crazy. This means Nylander or marner is out. No way they will be cap compliment with this roster. They can't even make it to the cup what are they thinking. They need defenders. This is ridiculous
Like Austin is great player but he's over payed. When you have a guy making 13.3 million a year you have no cap for other players also your set the price for everyone on team to ask for high price and if he wanted to win a cup he would of signed a contract for a lot less money. Only signed 4 years means he only cares about money or wants to leave toronto. Toronto is a mess becouse the whole point of getting new gm was to fix this problem and did not fix it. Nylander and marner are gonna want top dollar now. Have to start trading these guys or expect to lose as you can't over pay every player and expect to win
Highest paid player for 1 playoff series win is a joke. Idc how great mathews is. This is an overpayment that will cripple toronto even more than they already are. 4 year term is the only saving grace in my opinion.

Nathan MacKinnon is from Nova Scotia. They are a different breed out here. Same with Crosby who took 1.2 million less. Money is way down on the list of things that are important to the average east coaster.

I think 5 year max terms is the way to go.3 yr elc + 5+5 puts most players into their 30s and gives teams more flex and players more money.

I think Sammy’s take on contract discussion is off per usual. The NHL wants people talking about these things, it’s August and we’re in full on debates on whether this is good or not for the leafs and the league. NBA free agency is HUGE, lots of discussion and discourse comes out of it, and it’s looked at as nothing but a good thing for the league. Constant discourse, you should be happy, it’s part of the reason why you have a job.
Marner is not and has never been the better player or even the equal player
Matthews has multiple seasons in the top 100 of goals per game in a season
Marner isnt even in the top 200 of any offensive list (best season 236th assists per game)

Marner is not the goal scorer Matthews is, pure goals. Both are good defensively, not Matthews fault Keefe doesn't use him to kill penalties. Marner is the pure set up man, but he is smaller, not as good a playoff performer so far. And he is not a centre.

Hard cap just keeps the field even. And that’s what I love about the game of hockey. Literally any team in the league can complete with any team. I’m sorry Toronto screwed the dog with contracts and honestly just shows what kind of hockey players the leafs truly have.
You know if you put Austin's two contacts together . After his first elc contact . You get 9 years of an average avv of 12361111.11 over the 9 years that's less than McDavid 12500000. Over 8 years. But it doesn't work like that since the last 4 year's are 13.25 . But people are jumping all over Austin for only doing 5 and 4 year's at a time. So far he's committed more year's to his time than McDavid

If Matthews signed an 8 year extension. That would take him to 35 years old. People have been complaining about Tavares a couple of years now and he’s 33 years old making 11 million a year. Now these people wanted Matthews to sign for 8 years so you can pay Matthews 13.25 until he’s 35??? Doesn’t make sense
