  1. Because of the lockout season poker became a "sport". Ovi and Crosby did save the NHL. Fans were going to play poker instead of watching hockey

  2. Not weird
They think lots of people who have time on their hands in the USA for thanksgiving weekend people not shopping on Black Friday are going to want to watch nhl games

  3. It's gone from Ovi and Sid arguments to Hughes and Makar. Gonna be an interesting next decade with the young superstars in the league now that they are starting to take the torch

  4. Other than the first few seasons there never was an argument OV vs Sid! It was Sid and always was Sid! ov is an idiot and always was an idiot. One thing nobody EVER said about ov is that he’s smart.

  5. Hockey was much less interesting to Americans before Ovi came along, and that was in spite of the fact that the Stars had a mega-team that won the Cup back in 1999, the Lightning had just won the Cup in 2004, and the fact that the relatively new Colorado Avalanche were suddenly one of the most dominant franchises in the NHL. That outcome is primarily because of how the NHL was on the tail end of the Dead Puck era around this time, and it was rare to see any high-scoring games for it in spite of the talent at the time. The two-line pass was not allowed and resulted in the play being blown dead. The goalie was allowed to play the puck anywhere on his team's half of the ice. You could blame the fact that some of the best goalies of all-time played in this era and were just really good at keeping the puck out of the net, but the metagame of NHL hockey back then had disinterested potential American fans and killed TV ratings.

That being said, seeing a reckless 19-year-old phenom from Russia stroll in and score a goal while sliding backwards into the goalie? That phenom almost single-handedly rejuvenated the local sports world in DC and gave hockey fans around the world something to cheer about. Sid coming in as Ovi's foil was just icing on the cake. And they both played for teams from the same division? Imagine if Auston Matthews was a Calgary Flame, playing against Connor McDavid several times a season. That's what Sid vs. Ovi was like for Americans.

  6. If you asked the average person, not hockey fan, to name a hockey player back in the 2000's they only knew Ovechkin and Crosby. Sports are driven by their stars and these two transcended past hockey.

  7. Ovi and Crosby were stand out players not only for how many points they were adding to the score sheet but because of their almost ''exclusive'' play style, Ovi was a huge sniper power forward with great stick handling we still hardly see to this day, he was an agressive and strong player with a deadly shot…and Crosby is a jack of all trade, his ability to play along the board and maintain the puck was next level, and still to this day. His vision, his hands and his ability to score from every way possible, still one of the best backhand shot, has masterized way to deflect shots and on and on on top of being just as good defensively. Leadership and all. Outside the ice and during interviews they were polirising too.

As good as many players are today on the scoreboard I dont feel the same from them…they don't have that aura/vibes theses 2 had/still have.

  8. Exactly as I was going to type that Crosby is way too humble to corroborate this quote… leg said the very same thing!!! Ovi is 1000% right!! They made the product exciting & red hot… which the NHL has always had a hard time to do!!

  9. Saved the NHL?
    Hardly.

No he doesn't have a point.

    Sad.

  10. american thanksgiving nhl wants the tickett money anyways why dont you talk about friedman not being sent to the quite room
after being knocked out getting hit by the puck ?

  11. i have always admired the top talent in the league no matter who they played for with the exception of comrade ovechkin. he has always thought he was bigger than the game, the league, his team. an ego that thinks a league that has been in existence for over 100 years would fold after a strike if he wasn't there.

  12. Ovy's 38 and getting older. No one defeats father time. I don't think he's getting Gretzky's record. He might be really really close had there not been 1.5 lockout seasons. But even with that, it's still kind of hard.

  13. I think what helped Ovi v Crosby is they were in the same division. Toews v Bergeron isn't interesting cause they only met once in the playoffs. Penguins v Capitals was/ technically still is a fixture in the east every year
