Yes, some of these maneuvers are about cap space.

I’ve thought all along that Pitlick and Bonino were placeholders. Disappointed in Wheeler. Nice guy but slow and should not be on 1st line or PP. Goodrow needs to go, too.

They didn't have to "do this thing" with Pitlick and Bonino this year, Rangers never trust their prospects. It took Pitlick and Bonino playing like rocks for this to happen.
