René Robert était l’ingrédient manquant dont les Sabres de Buffalo avaient besoin pour enflammer la ligne la plus colorée et la plus productive de la LNH des années 1970 – la French Connection. Mais contrairement à ses coéquipiers vedettes (Gil Perreault et Rick Martin), Robert n’était pas un repêchage n ° 1 prisé. choix – en fait, il était essentiellement un rebut sorti de l’obscurité par un entraîneur qui l’avait autrefois écarté. Robert a saisi l’occasion avec les Sabres et est rapidement devenu une légende. Il a été le premier Sabre à atteindre le plateau des 100 points et il a marqué certains des buts les plus spectaculaires de l’histoire de la franchise. C’est l’histoire de René Robert, icône des Sabres au patinage rapide et au tir puissant, et son improbable ascension vers l’immortalité du hockey. La carrière de Robert étant incertaine, l’implacable Punch Imlach est de nouveau entré en scène et a acquis René en échange du vétéran vieillissant Eddie Shack dans ce qui s’est avéré être l’un des accords les plus déséquilibrés de la décennie. Robert, qui n’avait marqué que 7 buts en 59 matchs avec les Penguins, a marqué six buts en 12 matchs avec les Sabres et a préparé le terrain pour une décennie magique dans la Ville Reine. Au camp d’entraînement de 1972, l’entraîneur des Sabres Joe Crozier a placé Robert avec le spectaculaire centre Gilbert Perreault et le prolifique AG Rick Martin sur une ligne surnommée la « French Connection ». Perreault était la star avec son penchant pour les courses de bout en bout, Martin l’implacable buteur. Mais Robert était la pièce qui faisait fonctionner le trio – un ailier physique à tout faire qui rendait ses compagnons de trio meilleurs. 74-75 was my all time favorite season. a deep Flyers fan here , but Robert was one of my players i always checked to see how he did. Great player, a great person. RIP

I remember Rene Robert playing for the Tulsa Oilers. Once he hit the NHL a star was born.

I was a west coast kid and we had the california golden seals. They were not very good but we would go out to see the good teams come to town and everybody wanted to see the French connection. What a great video and what a wonderful time to be a kid.

Some people, you wish they could live forever. When I was a kid, these three made me a hockey fan for life.
Rene desrves a tribute thanks for this. Even as a kid on my paper route I enjoyed reading the sports section and seeing Rene's 100 pooint season in 1975. That trade for shack was as much a steal as Ron Caron's trade acquiring Adam Oates for Federko.R.I.P Rene!

Traded for Eddie Shack…man, I forgot that part…Rene was as amazing as presented.
I cried when they traded him.. oh we warmed up to John Van Boxmeer… but he wasn't Rene… and I always wonder if that deal wasn't made.. if the Sabres the following spring don't beat the Islanders to move on to the finals rather than the other way around… that trade really marked the end of an era in buffalo…

As a kid in Buffalo,I never missed a game either on the radio or tv,from 1975-1983,its a shame that the right moves weren't made for the 75 -80 teams to succeed, Perreault should have been dealt to a contender in 83 ,its a shame they didn't get a cup while they had the Connection and that core .
This brings back so many memories of watching hockey as a kid. That line was so great to watch.
