It's not even like they're sucking to get first round draft picks… They just suck, incompetence at every level from Hextall and Burke down to Sullivan. Way to take a winning franchise to absolute steaming bullcrap
Lol, at the time McCan was a journey man. He wouldn’t have exploded like he did with Seattle. Who was he passing to be the guy over Crosby, Malkin, Guentzel? He was best forward they had lol. Cry baby pen fans.
The Penguins were going to tail off, but it shouldn’t have happened quick as it did. Jim Rutherford had some questionable moves after the team won their second straight cup, but he left Ron Hextall a really good group of depth when he resigned, and in just two years Hextall destroyed it.
I sometimes think after JR resigned, the Pens should’ve let Patrik Allvin be the interim GM for that year and then hired someone that offseason.
This whole chain of events, is basically what caused the Penguins to have to part ways with Jake Guentzel.
The dark ages were the late 90's early 2000s. The years where Kris Beech was their best forward and defenseman Dick Tarnstrum lead the team in scoring. Not there yet, but the ship needs a new course or they will be soon.
Very similar to the end of the Doug Wilson era in San Jose. The quicker you can identify you’re in a rebuild phase the better. San Jose wasted 2 seasons thinking they just needed to make a few tweaks to the roster and they’d be right back to making the playoffs.
Flyers Fan: I was glad when he went to Pitt from Philly because we knew he would destroy the Pens like he did with the Flyers! According to Bobby Clarke, it was Hextall who insisted on taking Nolan Patrick over Cale Makar. The entire scouting staff knew the obvious, but Hextall overruled them. Worst draft decision in history
flag on the play for some of these players. Some went to other teams before fining their niche with the team mentioned. SO it was not the Pens who screwed up.
As a Stars fan, and more of a baseball (Texas Rangers) addict, I see your pain. And it recalls the entire San Diego Chargers debacle, with owner Alex Spanos. HE played the long game, even paying for the state of the art pre-season training facilities for his beloved San Fran Niners – while forcing the team he owns, San Diego, to train at older, underwhelming public spaces. Spanos de$ired prime televi$ion money, and wanted the NFL to allow him to move to Lo$ Angele$ or Vega$ – and got his wish decades later.
I hope your Pens, especially your top trio (Crosby, Malkin, Letang), don't have to suffer other seasons than 2023-24.
I swear he was making these deals and i was thinking wtf are we trading young players. Marino trade shocked me. I loved mccan and hienen. You wonder if its pay back for Lemieux and Brown destroying him. Lol imo this team never was the same after Fluery was let go. Look at the guy who they thought could replace him now.
Mike Matheson can skate and is a left shot. Mike Matheson: 72GP/10G/41A/51Pts, EK65: 72GP/8G/38A/46Pts, Letang: 72GP/8G/34A/43Pts. Trading Matheson for ridiculous Petry and trading for Granlund led to the EK65 trade directly. Could have kept Matheson at $4.875AAV. He has a good cap hit and can play and skate. All hex had to do was keep Tanev (hitter) and McCann (goal scorer) by not putting Carter/Blueger/Kapanan on the protected list. There goes the Pens depth and identity because hex can't evaluate.
Funny draft picks by Hextall in Philly were an omen he'd destroy the Pens. 2017 Hextall drafts bust Nolan Patrick over Cale Makar and Elias Pettersson. 2014 Hextall drafts Travis Sanheim over David Pasternak. 2015 Hextall drafts Ivan Provorov over Mikko Rantanen , Kyle Connor, Zach Werenski, Barzal, etc. In 2016 Hex drafted German Rubstov over Tage Thompson. Basically the Flyers could have drafted Cale Makar, David Pasternak, Tage Thompson and Mikko Rantanen but Hextall was HEXXING! Nothing personal Pen's fans.
It is amazing to me how to men can completely dismantle a hockey club and so many of the players they let go of, are now playing great for their respective teams.

Funny thing is that Dubas is possibly worse as a GM.
Looking back at it, McCann's and Marino's trade were HORRENDOUS
Flyers Ownership": Ron, you're going to Pitt. Have you ever heard os something called a "long con"? 😀😃😁 Neither have they… 😁😅😂🤣🤣🤣
Burke was a loser in Toronto, too. So overrated
Decline started with Burke, grew with Hextal, and blew up with the beantown bean counters taking over.

ironically dubas left mcann unprotected in toronto
Pens should have been heavy sellers at the trade deadline.
BONINO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! REMEMBER THE HBK LINE..
Who hired me Hextall?? That on them

Undercover flyers agent? 😂

Nylander is looking spicy on Columbus so far, lol
I’ll never forgive Hextall for protecting Carter over McCann. Haunts me to this day
As a Flyers fan I "tip my cap" to Hextall.. ty

This is why you never let a goalie do anything other than stop the puck. Fucking bonehead
As a pens fan this video hurts but it’s so very true. He ruined the twilight years of sids career
Been a hell of a ride 🖤💛

Dubas will continue to carry Hextal's torch

Winner of the Mike Milbury Award
Carter trade was a win, contributor for cheap and lowered cap hit
It could be worse guys at least Ellis Johnson wasnt your head coach, sigh.
Kinda destroyed the Flyers too. Man, he must hate Pennsylvania.

Dude never came across as very bright…..😅
Fenway sports group has the reverse Midas touch on franchises

As a Caps fan, I can say for certain, Hextall and the Pens are made for each other. 😂
