Lalonde was a terrible mistake by Yzerman
Detroit teams usually spend most seasons either at the bottom or just outside looking in
Lalonde’s not a good coach and the team isn’t playing hard under him. He’s saying the team may not be here again based off Seattle’s season. The teams were both built heavily on depth scoring because both teams lack top end talent. Seattle looks like a completely different this year and didn’t even sniff the playoffs after having 100 pts last year. It’s realistic that the wings regress next year if Kane leaves because the system has no one close to stepping in and playing in the top six. Stevie is also partly responsible for this collapse because hasn’t shown any ability to bring in anyone besides old overpaid bums on defense.
Lalonde is too much of a realist. He’s the complete opposite of Dan Cambell. And a better note, great to see Raymond go absolutely nuclear against the pens.
Watch nyr win the cup soon…on year 4 of Alex lafraneire being drafted by them. (Detroits best odds pick for being the worst team, and we dropped many placements). Stab in the heart….
All offense and no defense, no starting goalie, no depth at d, no second line center. Not many teams make it to pushing for the playoffs with this lack of talent. Seattle got a hot goalie, had more grinders, and had a better younger d core, the comparison is ridiculous. Perron, ghost, fabbri, sprong, Debrincat and kane yes even kane and cat are all one dimensional offensive players who bring little to board battles, can't push the puck down low, and aside from kane are extremely streaky. Copp, holl, Rasmussen, and veleno are one dimensional grinders who very rarely score. Compher is a good third line center but not on the second line. So basically they have 4 forwards who should be in the top 6 and a bunch of other guys who at best are bottom 6 players, that gives you one effective scoreing line and another line with one guy who can score with 2 other guys who can't orovide him the puck.
Yes, Lalonde is a weak loser. Question answered.
You guys are reading too much into a simple statement – it’s nothing more than an excuse for losing. “Well…we shouldn’t even be here…” REALLY?!? But you were! That’s such a terrible thing to say from a coach and needs to be addressed. Wouldn’t be surprised if he gets booed during next years opening season home game intro.
If you have a nice cushion to get into the playoffs…there is a reason. From the comments that he said after the Pens loss, it was almost the same from after the Caps game. I am sorry, but that is not a coach that you want, especially with a team that should have been in the playoffs, not fighting to try to get in. This is a huge issue and not words that should be coming out of a coach's mouth at all.
We played well and just didn't get it done….ok, that is acceptable…not we should not even be here. If you don't expect your teams to play hard and get into the playoffs, get out of Detroit. You have the talent to get in and even challenge some of the teams, but when he is saying that, good riddance. At least Campbell walked the walk after he talked the talk. I liked Newys, but no longer.
This team is so soft and easy to play against. Offensively, they are a perimeter team. Everything from the outside. While "outplaying" teams, they are not a threat. The playoffs will only expose that further. The defense is even worse. This team just isn't good enough on top of questionable coaching.
He’s been around too long.
