If Gardiner is so bad, how is he a +17 dman?
I thought the Leafs used all their compliance buyouts years ago? Won't a regular buyout count in full now? Not too much value in that. Don't know all the full buyout rules, but doesn't make financial sense if it counts against the cap anyway (I could be way off on this as I don't truly know).
Our rookie GM, blew this season, by committing to Nylander. There’s no way to build a competent team, with this huge salary cap hit on a player, that will never live up to naive exceptions. Lazy, soft and two steps slower than KK. What a shame…
I wonder if they know there’s more teams in the nhl then Edmonton and Toronto
they need to trade Tim and Sid for Jen hedger and Tessa Bonhome in bikinis doing the same show! seriously you can still trade gardiner for a quality D man with less money. ie Gudas from Philly is only making 3.3 mill.
Trade Jake Gardiner for a 2022 first round draft pick. Its 4 years away so many teams would not consider that much of a loss today – but down the road its a good return for the Leafs. The Leafs must wait 4 years to see an asset for Gardiner come back in return but when it does come back its a 1st rounder. Thats fair. Toronto does not need a first rounder now as they have no cap space. But by 2024 when that 2022 player enters the NHL the Leafs may be able to best utilize that asset at that time. On the other side a team gets a decent D man (not elite yes) but decent at zero cost for 4 years.

Leafs fan, but realistic. This team is going no where in the playoffs, that is if they even make it. They have not been good since beginning of Nov. Nylander was a big big mistake . Since he came back the team looks like it is completely uninterested in playing. And they need to learn how to play the last 2 minutes of a period.
I've never been a fan of Gardiner but he's a plus player and having perhaps one of his better years. Gotta look at coaches too in these situations. Gardiner was never good enough to be a top 2 D. However having him and Zaitsev rounding out the top 4 is not good and won't get the job done in the playoffs. Maybe move Zaitsev and get a solid physical D to play with Gardiner.

It's way too easy to dump on the Leafs defense. As of Feb 12, Rielly, Hainsey and Zaitsev are a combined +52 in the plus/minus ratings. That's right +52. Could it be that the real defensive problems lie within the forwards? Combined, Marleau, Matthews, Nylander and Kadri are minus 7. That's right minus 7. Next you're going to tell me that plus/minus is misleading. Is it? At Tampa, Kucherov, Point and Hedman. These key forwards are a combined +34. And on their entire roster there is only ONE player who is a minus player
