  1. The wings lack elite talent in the pipeline and that is a glaring issue. I do not bend over backwards to defend yzerman, but he really was handed a bad situation. The wings were a barren wasteland. And on top of that the wings have had no lottery luck. My major issue with yzerman was his decision to step on the gas during the Bedard draft year. That was the year to let it ride and sit in the basement again. Instead we got Marco Kasper (could be an okay third liner) and bad free agent signings

  2. "worst rebuild ever" Meanwhile Detroit is ahead of buffalo, ottawa, montreal etc, and only 2 of the MANY yzerman draft picks are in the NHL when they still have a bunch of studs who could end up being stars in ASP, Danielson, Augustine, Cossa, MBN all have star potential and those dont include the plethora of other great prospects like kasper, mazur etc. But yea, worst rebuild ever lmao. They will probably make the playoffs this year before the rebuild has even really taken off yet. and without a #1, 2 or 3 pick to boot. while buffalo, ottawa rebuilds are at their tale ends and still cant even make the playoffs.

  3. It just feels like it’s taking a really long time. I get that Ken Holland left a mess but as Wings fans we’re not used to not having playoff hockey. It was like death and taxes. The red wings always make the playoffs. And now… it’s been 8 years. I think wings fans are just getting impatient. But Stevie is doing what he has to do to rebuild the franchise.

  4. Anyone who thinks the wings rebuild is the worst ever should look to the other end of the lake at Buffalo. They are on their 3rd or 4th rebuild just since they hired Murray as the GM. Adams appears to have this team moving in the right direction.. but they still haven't gotten into the playoffs since 2011 (though last year missed by 1 pt.)

  5. It could be worse. Look at 66/67-82/83. 17 year span with the Wings only making the playoffs twice.

  6. They still don’t have that one “guy” the player that’ll be consistently good and reliable who’ll put up 100 points or be an elite two way player

  7. I'd give this rebuild a C+. This current roster has the makings of a regression year, but I do think they are on the right path to being a contender… even if it's the scenic route.

  8. he has done a pretty good job overall but zadina was a bad hit and svechnikov is good but he's a cane now. not sure what his thinking was with hronek and it's looking like a questionable move.

  9. I said last year during their SECOND collapse that if they were below the playoff line this year that it would be time to ask what the Hell Yzerman is doing. I'm sticking to that. Either make the playoffs or hire a GM that will get the job done.

  10. Yzermans tenure 6 offseasons has drafted 59 players only 2 full time on the roster to date. 1 decent trade for Debrincat although he disappeared for some games last year. 1 good signing in Kane he is old. Poor coach hire in Lalonde. kept Blashill around too long.

Has nothing to do with what he did in Tampa. What he inherited. Or what he did as a player. He has failed so far as GM of the Red Wings. Too many people trying to put lipstick on a pig. It’s still a pig. 🐷

  11. Zadina, and the lottery luck have really hurt. A number one pick or a tope 3 pick in any one of the drafts would have been really helpful. But alas

  12. I don't know that I'd call it the "worst rebuild ever", or even a "bad" rebuild for that matter, but I'd argue that Stevie has done as well as can be expected with what he had to choose from. Zero first or second overall picks during the rebuild? It's not like Edmonton drafting a bunch of top-3 picks during the late 2000s and early 2010s, or the perennial disaster that has been the Buffalo Sabres. Compared to that, the Wings are in decent shape.

  13. Worst rebuild ever? Has anyone looked at the New York Islanders over the last ooohhhh….30 years? Finally got good with Trotz and…gone. Edmonton Oilers only took since 2006 to make 2 real playoff appearances? Buffalo Sabres? People just aren't patient for the long game anymore. Yzerman hasn't had the easiest of time with the circumstances of this rebuild. If I have to fault him on his choices, I haven't been thrilled with the coaching staff's ability to make the team play defense. They would have been barely in the playoffs the last two years if that happened instead of burning out new goalies.

  14. Detroit rushed it… making some weird trades and signing old forwards to forward group 6

    Ottawa Rushed it… no defense

Buffalo this is a pressure year… they have a chance this year to progress but tough division.

Habs are at a pivotal point… so far so good 2.5 years in

    Canucks Stanley cup contenders 😂😂😂😂

should be the up there as recent worst rebuild ever but instead are on a 12 year retool, refuse to rebuild and not looking like contenders, more like pretenders.

    4 top 6 forwards
    2 top 4 D…

    👏👏👏

  15. The rebuild is a train wreck starting with his best 2 players still aren't signed yet, and it wasn't Steve but I think things went downhill when Zadina was picked over Quinn Hughes. Hronek is like a complete different player around him. Holland blew it and yzerman still ain't fixed it.

  16. Lolz… Look how long it took Edmonton to make any real progress. Do people forget the decade of nothing. Even leading up until the previous season, Edmonton could have been called the worst rebuild ever. They had like 7 years of top5 draft picks (like 5 of those were #1 picks) lol

    Just sayin

  17. First off, a lot of people contribute to a decision, whether that be trades, drafts, free agent signings, etc. With that said, I am not letting Yzerman off the hook that easily. Very under-impressed with most of the moves thus far in 5+ seasons. Our best player (in the future) probably hasn't even arrived yet in Detroit. We just haven't come up with high-end talent and that has been disappointing. Meanwhile in Dallas, Jim Nill and team seem to be very skilled in drafting and developing at least.

  18. The measure of the rebuild isn't how good the team is x number of years out or when they return to the playoffs. The measure of the success of the rebuild is how good the team will be on the other side, specifically measured by the number of Stanley Cup victories.

I would rather a rebuild which takes another decade to build a team that wins four more Stanley Cups before the next rebuild, then one which reaches mediocrity and makes the playoffs this year, but rarely gets to the later rounds of the playoffs and never wins the Stanley Cup.

We won't know for many years if the current rebuild is a success by this standard, but there are signs. In addition to NHL team improvement from worst in the league to mediocre, we have simultaneously seen the talent pipeline improve from "the cupboards are empty" to one of the most stacked in the league. As anxious as the fans (myself included) are to bring more of these future Red Wings to Detroit, it would be unwise to go too quickly and empty out the talent pipeline again. We want to simultaneously have a great Red Wings team and a great talent pool, so that we can contend for many years, increasing the odds of winning at least once and making more realistic the possibility of winning multiple Cups before the next rebuild.

I am old enough to remember the critics who prior to 1997 said that we would never win the Stanley Cup so long as Yzerman was our captain, that if he was capable of leading us to the promised land then he would have done so already, and that we should cut our losses, trade him away while other teams were still willing to give us something for him, and start a rebuild at that time. Fortunately, their advice was not followed at the time, and they all look rather foolish now. We know from experience that Yzerman can build us a winner, and the only thing he needs from us fans to make it happen is patience. He has never yet failed to (eventually) reward that patience.

  19. It's worth noting that Ken Holland burned the barn on his way out. Justin Abdelkader is still on payroll until 2026! Hasn't played for the Wings since 2020. That's a choice Ken Holland made, not Stevie Y. There were a ton of terrible contracts dumped on him in the wake of Holland's departure.

  20. People are so delusional and don’t understand we’ve had bad luck in the draft ms over the years and they blame yzerman for it 😂😂😂.They have no idea what kinda dangerous team yzerman is building,F the yzerman haters I’d like to see them do his job😂😂😂.They obviously don’t know either that he’s doing it the proper way by taking time so we can contend and win for a very long time.guess the yzerman haters like being in the playoffs for a short amount time and back to rebuilding 😂😂😂they’ll regret not liking yzerman’s rebuild and players he’s drafted in the near future.they also probably don’t pay attention to yzerman’s media availability videos often cause he describes how good our prospects are in them ,and yet people complain about the players we draft .we have a deep roster with a lot of talent and depth still that knows what it takes to win we should of made the playoffs last year Washington got lucky and help cause they scored with no goalie in the net 🙄.people don’t see how close we are,and don’t realize we are the most consistent rebuilding team cause every year we keep improving and all the other rebuilding teams don’t like buffalo and Ottawa they have a very successful year and barely miss the playoffs and then the next year they’re back in the basement just like last year, and they always have buffalo and Ottawa above Detroit in rankings and thats ludicrous, the league always underestimates us and probably the most disrespected team in the league cause people sleep on our talent and how good and exciting we played last season.

Yzerman don’t want to rush the rebuild yzerman haters god get it right he doesn’t wanna rush like the rangers And LA did .LA hasn’t even won a playoff series since coming off a rebuild😂. and why ?cause they rushed it and didn’t draft a good enough young core of players like yzerman is 🤷‍♂️. The rangers yes they’ve succeeded in the playoffs and made it to two conference finals but that doesn’t count cause the main goal is the Stanley Cup and have they won it no RANGERS ARE OVERRATED i don’t even have LA predicted in the playoffs next year they don’t even have good defense or a goalie.rangers also didn’t draft enough core players they’re pretty much filled with just veterans 😂😂,only young players they’ve gotten was like what k Andre miller ,Adam fox ,lafreniere ,kakko and their goalie that’s OVERRATED.😂😂😂🗑️🗑️.Can’t wait to see the look on the yzerman haters faces when they see how dominant we are in the future from all of our prospects and that was all done by Steve yzerman.

  21. Zadina was a Ken Holland draft pick the year before Yzerman took over. Sad thing is Ken Holland and the wings brass were predicted to take Quinn Hughes, as they had him slated as their 6th pick, but because Philip Zadina fell to them at the sixth spot they took him instead of Hughes, where would they have ended up being, if they would have drafted Quinn Hughes. A definitely playoff team and that's for sure .

  22. They have improved every single year since he took over the GM role. It's really as simple as that.

  23. I think they might slip into the playoffs this year miss a few more years THEN have a playoff team

The bad rebuild title belongs to buffalo

  24. Steve had to take a couple years to unload some contracts and players that weren't going to be part of the rebuild and accumulate some picks.

  25. There was no farm team whatsoever, no picks, lots of bad contracts, bad drafts, lack of picks before he got here. He’s been able to get a progressively better team every year, while filling the farm with prospects. There’s lots of NHL caliber guys already drafted, Marko Kasper, Daniel’s (he’s got all star potential IMO, idk why people sleep on him still), OSP who’s going to be a future superstar, Nugaurd, multiple goalies, and that’s just the guys who aren’t gonna make the team.

You still have Edvison, Berregren, both who will play in the NHL this year.

Now consider while filling the cupboard he’s also gotten Copp, Compher (good signing), DeBrincat, Patty Kane, Tarasenko, Talbot, Lyons, and drafted Sedier, and Raymond.

That’s all pretty solid in my book.

  26. Yzerman could have built a much better team in this time than he did.. Put a lot of money into mediocrity like Copp, Compher and Husso.. With the same money got Nashville: O'Reilly, Stamkos and Marchessault.. So the money could have been used much better and the young players could have had real top players as mentors..

  27. If you want the worst rebuild ever, look at their baseball counterpart. Before Scott Harris, the Detroit Tigers had Al Avila who ran this team six feet under the dirt for years by trading all their star players for less than nothing and lied about the rebuild being finished while they went 47-114 in 2019.

  28. People mention the poor lottery luck, which certainly has hindered the rebuild, however, I never see people mention that the drafts during the years they bottomed out were particularly weak drafts. The only truly elite top 3 pick they missed out on was Jack Hughes, but they made out with Seider, who likely goes 2nd in a redraft. Same with Raymond in the 2020 draft. They've done well in the first rounds, but as soon as they started getting better is when the drafts likewise got better. It's poor luck that befell Yzerman more than anything.

  29. Anybody that says this is a bad rebuild, exposes just how little they know, I know rebuilds like Edmonton are easier to understand. Get those top of your line up guys and try and fill out the rest of their roster, but that is exactly what a bad rebuild looks like, its all built on praying you get lucky, Mcdavid wont play forever and wont always be healthy, and without him where are they?

I know it seems dumb to all the loud "fans" but anywhere else in life if you want to build something that lasts you start at the bottom and build a solid foundation, everything else comes after that. Building from the top down is how you build something that looks nice but crumbles under the slightest pressure.

It breaks my heart because instead of sitting back and letting the man teach them how to build a team, they are too busy assuming they know more than someone who's spent his entire life in the NHL to learn anything so they cant even be creative in their critiques.

  30. year 6 of the yzerplan and they have compher, copp & velano down the middle 🤣🤣🤣🤣
