  1. Atrocity is such a misunderstood word! There has been considerable ink spilled on whether Sherman was a war criminal, and schools of thought seem to be most consistently split along the Mason-Dixon Line. If slavery was a scourge (and that too, believe it or not, is controversial) then the question becomes what means justify its end. I think Sherman would have said that if Atlanta was an atrocity, war itself was also an atrocity (defined in the dictionary as a wicked or atrocious act of violence). But sometimes a necessary one. I will say this though – there was a collective sigh of relief in Calgary that we didn't rename it to one of those cutesy "cowboy" names. We've had Broncs and Stampeders out the ying-yang for decades, "Flames" was a nice change of pace.

  2. General Sherman's troops did not set Atlanta on fire. General Sherman sent in troops to put the fires out that the Confederacy set to some of their supplies before abandoning the city.
