What’s a REALISTIC prediction for when this team is in the playoffs?
We are still paying on Justin Abdelkader and will be for 1 more season. This is the legacy of was Yzerman took over. Fans want the current Wings team to be better than last year, but they also want to get rid of specific veterans to make way for the youth. The team is not good enough with the veterans, a youth movement will make them worse. I think they stepped on the gas a season too early. They need another decent dman to anchor the 2nd pair and some sort of center/forward star. Now with both goalies injured, feels like it's going to be a long season. Hoping Kasper, Edvinson, Berggren continue to improve and solidify themselves in the core of this team going forward. Playoffs, maybe next year.
As an OG6 team, the Wings are a team that should be in the playoffs. It’s sad to see them barely missing
I dont see enough there for them to be good in a long time. Not enough elite talent on the team or in the pipeline
The Yzerplan is two fold. First his draft lottery luck has been very unlucky in addition his FA hasn’t been great. However, if he is trying to sign the best FAs and they don’t want to come and support his young cast all he can do is go next in line. The issue with the Yzerplan is there been NO generational players that are instant fixes even in the draft. People need to shake this fantasy that there is a McDavid in every draft or free agency he choose Copp and Chariot instead. // The way I look at it is since his arrival the team point total went from 39pts to 91pts andSeider, Raymond, Edvinsson and a trending Kasper are starting to become part of the core. Cupboard absolutely full of potential prospects. Issue is getting a high end talented Star….. but why does everyone think they are just so readily available? It’s foolish to think he isn’t doing the best he can with what he has been given…. If no one sees or understands this, then they don’t understanding real life NHL rebuilds, they should stick with their PlayStation rebuilds.
The people questioning the progress of the rebuild learned everything they know about hockey from video games. You can’t take a team with one quality player in the entire organization (including minor leagues), total cap crunch, and zero premium assets and turn them into a playoff team in 5 years. You need to find 22 other guys who belong on a playoff roster, and a coach who can get them there. The fact that we’re as close as we are is miraculous.
Bad season, but Yzerplan is still going solidly.
It's not always best just loose with young guys, get draft picks and then they never learn right ways.
For playoff spot you need good team, Red Wings just isn't there this year. Now its time young stars to lead, some take roster spots from vets and many for develop young guys.
I’d say two years gotta wait for Cossa to be fully ready along with sandin pelka and Mazur and buchelkov
Nothing is clicking. I believe that Yzerman is wanting to build the team ground up with strictly drafting, and not through FA. It is brutal now, saying all of the vets have been BUSTS of epic proportions. We've also been unlucky with draft lottery sometimes. We knew when we dumped a lot of the goals from last year we would regress, but not like this. If we didn't have that insane run and all the fun last year, this would be same old situations.
Four big problems as I see it.
1) Pro scouting and player evaluation is abysmal and has caused the team to overvalue bad players and undervalue good ones. Chiarot / Petry are the worst second pair in the NHL and Gus is terrible, while Walman and Ghost are dominating elsewhere. Maatta is playing solid matchup minutes now with Utah. Bad asset management.
2) Amateur scouting hasn’t produced any big hits in rounds 2-7 of the draft.
3) The draft lottery has burned the Wings badly. Instead of getting elite/generational players, they’re getting solid core/complementary pieces. It takes superstars to win. Detroit has none.
4) Coaching is not extracting good value from the roster.
I think it’s a coin toss at best as to whether or not this becomes a Buffalo-style double dip rebuild. Very easy to imagine the team stuck in an indefinite funk.
Welcome to being a 06-07 Maple Leafs fan…
The beginning is wrong, the Blues were the best team to not make the playoffs with 92 points
Yall realize that the rebuild didn't technically start till yzerman took over right? Holland didn't do nothing till his final year when he started adding draft picks and yzerman couldn't really do anything with the roster till Holland terrible contracts came off the books, yzermans biggest mistake was letting bertuzzi go and getting worthless coup for 5 years at 5.5 mil whose never score 20 goals in a season, it could be 15 in a season I know it was low
I can’t take you seriously for saying Berggren hasn’t panned out
I think people think rebuilds are easier than they are. Ken Holland said that it would take 10 years to rebuild and that's what it's looking like it will be, especially when you whiff on early pics in the rebuild. Still this team is just a few pieces away from being good and they have most of them in the prospect pool, it's just on Stevie y to make a big trade or signing in free agency and a few years of prospect development. Just look at Florida a few years ago, all of a sudden they have tkachuk and they win a cup. It just takes time if you don't win a draft lottery, even if you do, look at Buffalo, they have had so many first overall picks and they still can't make it.
It’s hard to take this video seriously, narrator hasn’t been around long enough to talk with authority about the Wings.
26-27 season will be the start of the new Redwings.
27-28 will be a good season, with growth continuing from there.
I think a lot of people underestimate how bad the situation was in 2017. The Wings had no talent and could not afford to buy anyone. Tanking was truthfully the best option. But I am equally concerned about the lack of big signings this past summer. If this was supposed to be a playoff year, Yzerman wasn't signing like it.
The Wings fans I know are still very patient, and they seemingly didn't expect much this year. But what is the breaking point?
Not a Red Wings fan, but I’m not sure how you can’t be skeptical of Yzerman. The signings have been terrible, asset management has been suspect, and drafting has been good, but not elite. We gotta see who is going to pan out, and when, but as of now, I’m worried this team will be stuck in mediocrity. They lack any forward punch outside of their top 3 players, and the guys they have in their forward core are aging fast, the defense is maybe the worst in the league, at best, 31/32. Cossa needs to be something, fast, because Talbot is the only goalie of the last 5 Yzerman has brought it who has played at a replacement level or higher. It’s tough man, a lot of questions, a lack of answers. Yzerman may have signed a few of the same contracts that he arrived on the job with, bloated overpayments of mid talents.
First there was "Holland's contracts…" Then came "No draft lottery luck…" Currently the favorite excuse is "Lalonde…" There will always be excuses not because of who Yzerman is but who he was. As long as people hear his name and think of him holding up the Cup as a player (and not the guy who got to a Tampa team that already had two all-star cornerstone talents and still was mostly known for playoff failure when he left) Yzerman is going nowhere and very likely, neither are the Red Wings.
edvinson and kasper are gonna be amazing in a short amount of time. we just need a serious goalie and i think we'll be fine
It takes longer than people think to rebuild from last place. They’re doing fine.
just wait for asp and mbn and you will have 82 wins a season
Saying that Holland left the Wings with a bunch of bad contracts can no longer be an excuse anymore with how many bad free agent contracts Steve has signed. I understand they’ve been screwed by the draft lottery but some of the moves he’s made like paying to get rid of Walman are totally inexplicable to me.
I worked at LCA in 2019. It was just kind of sad
I think getting rid of Bertuzi was a mistake. A good hockey team needs someone like that
coach 🤑
I’m old enough to remember the Dead Wings.
All we need is a slight defense adjustment and damn Petry on the bench with a replacement for husso and we will be like last year with better goaltending now that rimer is gone and Talbot is pretty good
People dont understand how a rebuild works. You dont sign players early in a rebuild with young drafts. You get old vet winners (Think Kane and Tarasenko) to build a cup culture, even without the skill yet. You get good locker room guys, which we have. Our drafts have been great, and many of them ARE panning out. We have Seider, Kasper, Raymond, Rasmussen and Cossa has been a wall in AHL, to name a few. Now that they're solidified, the next 2-3 years is going to be getting pieces that build around those young rookies.
Yzerman said this was going to take a decade to rebuild, and people don't realize how shit we were when Yzerman took over. It wasn't just a rebuild for him, it was putting out a fire and then trying to rebuild from there. You say Seider is a shocking move? Raymond who's become absolutely clutch as fuck and great. Not to mention our Goalies are rock stars right now, and we have the best power play in the league. Yes our 5v5 is ass, our D is trash outside of Rasmussen and Seider, but we have real high points to build around. Larkin is still a stud as well.
Are we there yet? Fuck no, not even close, but we have those foundational pillars to build around now. Have we taken a step back this year, yes. Personally i blame Lalonde, he needs to go. But everybody putting so much blame on Yzerman when we has grabbed great drafts, brought in two multiple cup winning vets to build a good locker room mentality, and in general has been mostly good.
This, and all the "Hearted" comments shitting on Yzerman just screams the channel creator hates Yzerman, red wings, or just wants to jump on the bandwagon to shit on things for clicks. Either way, he's not to be respected.
Let’s face facts. Yzerman is way over his head and it’s pretty clear he doesn’t have a plan.
76ers esque
Last season I was surprised that the team almost made the playoffs. When that season started I figured they'd still miss by like 8 or 10 points. For the first time in forever the team could actually score. It was exciting. Yeah the defensive game was still a struggle and goaltending has been a struggle the entire time during this rebuild. But wow, they can actually put pucks in the net for a change. Dang, the Wings should be looking for a wild card spot if they can just tighten up the D game a bit in 24-25. Cool. LET'S GO!!!
Meanwhile… 24-25. The team can't score 🙁 . OK the powerplay is great… but the penalty kill is literally the worst in the league. This version of the team can't win 5 on 5 hockey. That's the part that is shocking to me. The goaltending in the first quarter of the season has actually been very acceptable (we'll see how that goes as the season goes on). I've only seen a few games this year to make any real judgment as to what is consistently wrong with the Wings 5 on 5, but it's going to absolutely destroy any thought of making the playoffs this year if they can't get that in order.
The YzerFail
Maybe Kaner will save them 😅
0:10 I can’t believe I’m the only person I know who is outraged last year that we finished tied with WSH in points but had a whole extra win! But because of the NHL insanely stupid tie breaker we somehow sat out to let a 40 win team go instead of the 41 win team, making nhl the only sport where you don’t play to win, you play to win in regulation + OT. We had more total wins and more regulation, just not more ROW’s
Bergeren is on the starting lineup. How has he not panned out?
Yall have like 10 Stanley cups try being a Sabres fan on year 13 of our rebuild, a whole generation knows just playoffless hockey
I really hope Larkin gets a cup in his time here. He deserves it for being this team’s franchise player when there was barely any franchise left
If they want to become a contender, they’ll need an elite C.
Need to give up on older guys and let the kids go and build. We do need some vets but not what we got. Also the league changes every year so last year ain’t this year man. Let the kids go.
ive been a redwings fan my whole life personally a lot of the issues i see are the fa signings and coaching i wasnt really thrilled lalonde being brought back and trading walman hurt me personally but drafting has been amazing and while my feelings on steve yzermans are mixed i dont trust chris illitch to find a better gm so im fine with yzerman as gm may take a couple more years imo to get back in there
No chance on the playoffs in 24-25
I was born in 91, the wings were good for so many years it honestly still brings me enjoyment to see them suck so hard. I hope this team is bad for another century
patience
It would be hilarious to see the Habs finish ahead of the Sabres, red wings and senators. With laine back now it’s quite possible
Yzerman is the single most overrated GM in hockey, dude was gifted a contending team in Tampa. He didn’t make them good
I love this team: mistakes will be made but they will get better. They’ve improved every year since their low. I agree it’s time to take off.
