I think it makes sense, possibly too much sense. The Wings can afford it plus have all sorts of quality bits and pieces to make the deal attractive.

You always upgrade when you can and that would be filling a giant hole the wings have, however, I doubt he’s leaving
19 million in projected cap space next year. The only expiring contracts this year are Petry and a couple of replaceable bottoms sixers. Sign Rantanen for $13-14 million, front load his contract so he makes 15 million for the first two season, then once all the kids are set in the roster on their second or third year of elc's, make a push for one more trade with some assets and they'll be humming towards deep playoff runs by then.
Look at the line he plays on in Colorado and look at who he'd play with in Detroit. Also Colorado has Makar. I think his stats drop off dramatically. Not worth the money.

Detroit already made a mistake by rushing their rebuild and putting themselves out of the first overall/franchise center conversation. I see them being a middling team for a while
14 million? Zero chance that happens, and it shouldn't. If you take him away from Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar he will drop 20+ points, so you would be paying a 70-80 point 29 year old wing more than Auston Matthews. Just stay the course, bring your kids along, and when you're actually competitive you can sign a big name free agent. Once Danielson, MBN, and Axel Sandin Pallikka are on the team and playing significant minutes you can make a big move. No one wants to confront it but we are still 3 years away from all of that happening, and that is when you go big name hunting.

Sounds good, but why are there all of these talks for big named Forwards to sign with the team, that is not what we need we need better DEFENSE.
SY will not pay anyone more than Larkin. He just needs to be thinking Defense and not offense we have a few players that are signed for a year after this season and 3 years that should be moved. But SY wants 200 foot players who have offense and defensive games and we have prospects who can play in the NHL but too many overrated players who are making too much. Trade Debrincat for Rantannen
Kane has not been playing well this season he needs to get it together and Kasper is the center he needs for the rest of the season. They are just trying to make pretty passes and get stripped off the puck. Kasper is starting to remind me of Zetterburg the way he holds onto the puck. He will get better with time. This coach needs to be more aggressive with the roster the PK is the worse in the league.
