If you got the skill and even more important, the on-ice awareness, size isn’t as important. Theoren Fleury and Marcel Dionne proved that. And Hughes is 2inches taller than Dionne, and 4inches taller than Fleury.
All Hughes needs to do is watch Lidstrom game film. That was defensive surgery.

Dont watch much hockey but I caught a period and a half of Canucks the other day. And I was just blown away with how good Q Hughes is! Had the idea that he was flashy but a bit of a liability. That couldnt be further from the truth. Hes just soo cool with the puck, never in a rush, very rarely gambles, great passer, great skater, moves the puck himself when needed, leaves it for others when that is wiser. Probably good on the defensive side too, but mostly he seemed to be in possession and control.
Gen talent… he’s easily the best D man in the game for the past 2 years and he’s just getting better
Hard to score goals against him when he keeps possession of the puck for so much of his shift. The guy makes plays out of nothing and makes it look effortless. I wasn’t sold on him when he first started in the NHL, but I quickly changed my tune.
I would be interested to see his stats during the playoffs when teams were really targeting him and laying the body on him

I felt a real advantage as a smaller defensmen. I basically operated as a Center Back (Soccer)… Sweeping/Clearing the puck or making plays to the offense.

Big never beats brains. Its handy, but if ol' big guy is often a step behind then what good is he? If someone is reading the play & regularly getting the jump on opponents, defensively & offensively, then thats gold, regardless of if a player is big or small. Just ask Martin St Louis, among others.

north america has always been way too obsessed with "athletes" which outside of american football doesn't really mean anything, being able to bench a million pounds won't help you play hockey
