this franchise is in hell right now. you can spin it however you like. Lalonde is not the guy. but they will keep him. and Raymond and Larkin stink together on the top line. yet they will remain together. Ray's lucky fluke deflection late ensures both of those things. that fluke play btw made it 49-49 goals for/against at 5v5 the past 2 years when Raymond and Larkin are both on the ice. in just under 1/3 of the ice time, Kane and Larkin at 5v5 are outscoring opponents 17-8 when together.
the franchise at this point is a fantasy camp for a coach who should never have been named an NHL head coach, and a good not great winger prospect who the team is so desperate to manufacture stardom for they'll sacrifice entire teams and seasons to try to do so.
the playoff drought will go on. smarter better more serious franchises whose focus is on winning and entertaining the paying customers will snap up available talent at head coach (such as Montgomery or Q) while the Wings waste time and opportunity on an obvious dud.

There’s been plenty of frustration with this team but that look on Roy’s face after the Wings went up is so satisfying. The Islanders announcer described Petry as solid defensively so I had a good laugh at that as well.
Yea. Chiarot/Petry are always at the bottom. If you look, Chiarot has the higher negative bar and its usually not even close. Showing that while Petry is prone to one or two Goofs or Gafs, He is not the primary problem on that pairing.
Like Scotty said, Johansson and Holl should be the 2nd pair, should have been this way a long time ago. They are the only defenseman other than Seider and Edvinsson that can actually defend. Holl is obviously limited offensively but he tries to keep it simple, he's good when he does that and doesn't turn the puck over. Petry, Gustafsson and Chiarot are all turn over machines, get caught out position and are bad at defending.
2 goals against is a win in the vast majority of games.
The pairing of Seider and Ed was so good again. This pairing is so much fun.
The future is here. This game should show people that the "Yzerplan" is on a good path with the youth.
It takes longer yes, but I think Detroit will have at least 3 rookies on the team next year.
Red wings have this city in purgatory. Doing just enough to keep us interested, but not enough to make us remotely excited about this team.

Petry did have one moment where he cleaned out 2 Islanders in front of the net. Never saw him do that before.
It’s great that the core/youth is stepping up and coming up clutch. Also nice to see 5v5 goals. Still a lot to criticize, but nothing I want to see more than the guys of the future producing. Lalonde is still a bad coach, and INSISTS on having terrible defensive pairs, and weird line combinations. It looks to me like he’s panicking.
My whole focus is how much the youth impacts the team. Playoffs or not….

Not to put a damper on the Red Wings victory, but this is a classic case of a teams record versus one team versus a teams record versus the rest of the league. Now that they don’t have the Islanders to kick around anymore what does the rest of the season look like? Not very good I suspect.
I’ve said it before and I’ll continue to say it, I think Chiarot is a decent defender and would be if he was not paired with Petry.
There was one play where Petry went behind the net to check the puck carrier, and Chiarot and Larkin followed suit, leaving the front of the net wide open with 2 Islanders there. My god!
When this team plays the way they did in the 3rd period, they look like they can play with any team in the league, especially with the goaltending they’re getting from Lyon and Talbot. The problem is they don’t even seem to put a full game of that play together. Also, this power play needs to figure it out again. That 2nd power play looked more like a PK. It was hard to watch
I’ve been saying Holl and Johansson as 2nd pair for weeks. Keep playing the kid, he’s only going to get better.
Even with the win, I can only hope SY’s plan is to fire Gru at years end. It is so painful to watch this team play this year.

Yes please sit kane for another game. If he is essential for their pp then he needs to be healthy, as clearly thats all he brings to the table, given they play just as good with or without him, unless their pp is effective.
My mom flew in from Tampa yesterday morning for the holiday. Chiarot and Petry were both defending players down low, Larkin is the only one who left a guy open when he moved away from Horvat. Chiarot and Petry are having the hardest time but the two games before this one Chiarot was near the top of the Hockeystatcards. He isn't the problem on his pairing. Johansson has shown plenty of potential, give Chiarot someone who can skate and make good passes and I bet we'll have a much easier time.
They need to start thinking about an Edvinsson extension ASAP before his price tag goes waaaayyyy up

I agree with Brian shoot the puck more, screen like Joe V, tip like Raymond L the same as all the other teams in the league who get most of their goals this way or fluke it in as they can't score nice goals like Detroit. No team can miss open net opportunities like Detroit. The Wings should be scoring more. Get Copp a paddle like Pavel D so he bury all his chances. I can't wait until they play again Scotty and I hope the coach can counter again and Detroit goes on offence again in the 3rd. Chariot runs the defensive matchups. He needs a new partner as Ben plays the system asked of him. If Chariot hit Brain or Scotty like he did Lee they would be carried out on a stretcher. I wonder what Scotty would have been commenting on if he was around when the Wings from 74-85 had 12 seasons of never reaching 70 points. It's a salary cap parity league where many players don't want to go to Detroit, the Wings management team is doing a good job for the talent they have. Go Wings GO, Win or Lose!!!
