It is most definitely kneeing but really looks to be reactional kneeing versus intentional. Helleson is playing the acceleration of Zary going wide on him and it looks like he wanted to throw a hip check if you pause at 1:52 of the video (which is wild in today's game) or to at least make contact so Zary couldn't cut to the net. Then Zary changes direction with the toe drag and Helleson's first reaction is to stick out his left leg to prevent that (Helleson's body is parallel to the boards and he is skating East-West). Obviously, this is a penalty and very dangerous, but it appears more like a gut reaction to the attempted toe drag then him intending to do that. Putting the video in 0.25X speed and the impact is directly knee on knee. Hope Zary is not significantly injured but I don't see Helleson being "dirty" for the knee.
I have no dog in this fight, but is it at all possible that the knee on knee was accidental? I know slowing it down, you tend to inflict intention on plays like this, but it happened so fast, I can't imagine it was wholly 100% intentional to take him out knee on knee… Am I wrong?
Also, I hope and pray that Zary is ok.. Those kinds of injuries can end careers if they're bad enough.
In the 90s, guys knew that you should not go diagonally across the offensive zone. The opposite side defender can step up and end the threat you represent. Trying to determine what body part touches first is ruining hockey. "The headlight touched before the fender!" It is a car crash people. Hits like this are happening because the game is faster, guys have less fear, and the defender is left with the option of trying to hit an elusive wing that evades at the last possible second leaving the defender with the option to "miss the hit" and allow you across the "royal road" for a prime scoring opportunity, or expand your body and do whatever it takes to "get a piece of the guy" so he cannot skate clean across the center of your zone and put that puck top left corner on a moving goaltender. The 5-minute penalty and game misconduct are because the guy was injured. I prefer hockey from a time where guys knew they "would" get injured doing that.

Players are allowed to move from being hit, it is the hitters responsibility to adjust. He went for big hit, it was not there and he went right through his leg.
