Didn't care about the last "World Cup" (or the one before) and I could not care less about this 4 nations. Why? This is NHL's Coke Zero version of the olympics. NHL can't even make a good all star game. Sorry I have better things to do. Call me when it is an actual world tournament and when it happens with some regularity.
If they come out of the gate like it's game 1 of the playoffs every one will care because everyone wants to see that kind of hockey. Even the most casual observer immediately spots that difference and is interested.
Like it or not, this tournament is an upgrade on the all star game.

The problem with these sorts of events is that it requires substantial suspension of disbelief to ignore the fact that we all know these players aren't 100% invested. We know what 100% invested looks like. We see it every spring in the Stanley Cup playoffs. It's what makes the playoffs so incredible. This won't be that. Between this consideration and the inherent randomness of the event due to nobody having a training camp to build unit cohesion, it's hard for these events not to feel a little gimmicky. Still fun though, due to the extraordinarily high caliber of the talent on the ice.

Hellebuyck better not get injured during this pointless tournament that no one is watching. Okay maybe it’ll draw 300k fans but garbage b-rate wrestling shows can draw 700k weekly.
Russia deserves to be there more than Finland just based on the size of the pool of nhl players each nation can draw from.
I think the last seated country when the tournament is done should get bumped and there should be a lottery for some of the other country for next year.
Any Euro country's with insufficient nhl players could make a Euro team.

Shutting the league down for two weeks?? For something where you are not even showcasing the greatest scorer of all time?? This is awful and garbage. Hey, NHL, use the most important game during the regular season and run the skills competition the day before the Winter Classic. Rotate it EVERYWHERE! Let every team host the game, Get rid of the All Star Game, and create more exciting skills competitions. If you must have this, go back to the North America vs. the World.
I get doughty has a long resume but. Norris – 9 years ago, Stanley cups 11 and 13 years ago. Olympic golds – 11 and 15 years ago. It’s 2025 he’s not a top Canadian defenceman anymore
as a czech, as much as im butthurt we’re not a part of the tournament, truth is we dont even have 6 nhl defenseman. there could be a czech goalie tandem in every team (there’s 9 currently active in the NHL) but only have 4 D-men…
2 week break from men’s hockey will be odd. Could not care less about this tournament. Rather just have the ASG and move on than a made up cash grab for owners. Pretending it’s some friendly tournament when America is taking about invading and subjugating Canada is feels gross in my heart. The NHL needs to say something in support of Canada as a nation. It’s not just politics it’s international crimes being talked about.

It's kind of wild that USA potentially losing a leader on the blueline like Hughes and they still don't look to John Carlson, a proven veteran leader who is the #1 defensemen on the top team in the entire Eastern conference–a guy with a great international pedigree going all the way back to his golden goal at the 2010 World Juniors. Did he like decline to be on the waitlist or something? It seems like such a clear choice. Do they have too many right handed shot defensemen?

There's a Rugby one called the 6 Nations and it exists quite happily alongside a world cup and Olympic rugby, seeing this as a 1 off of course it makes no sense, but 20 years in, there's gonna be some real rivalry. However America may well be banned from the next one given how the first 3 weeks of that Nazi's presidency has been going.

idk, feels like whoever wins there'll be caviats thrown in like ''well X wasn't there'' or ''X team wasn't in the tournie''. Also, I'd argue the European squads would benefit from getting other than NHL players in the line up as well. They use players from EU leagues all the time in international tournaments and there are examples of unexpected stars/heroes every time coming out of those leagues. For a lot of them the motivation to perform in international tournaments is very high.

Unless a player is tuning in to specifically watch their buddy, I highly doubt non playing players will watch. They’re very open about not caring about hockey when it’s not them
I think Canada vs. US means a hell of a lot more to Canada than to the US. In Canada, everyone will care about the game. In the US only hockey fans will care and there aren't too many of us. In the US, we hockey fans really want the US to win, but if you're not a hockey fan, meaning about 295 million out of a population of 300 million, you won't even know the tournament exists.

The "russia issue" is horsesh*t in my opinion. Were not talking about taking players from the khl, we're talking about NHL PLAYERS. Why, because of politics, should there be no Russia? It's not like there's going to be a Putin invite. These guys all play with each other nightly, and some all-star Russians, kaprizov kuch ovi (and im not looking up to remember more lol) but I digress. Some of the best in the league, blocked for something they literally have no control of. Ridiculous. Maybe next, we should go by religious faith. If they're I dunno, Muslim, Mormon, Christian, should they be not allowed to play?

Swedes and Fins care. Canadians have their "Little Brother" mentality in top gear with the anthem booing and hate of US leadership. And US has always had the Little Brother mentality in hockey…. and this time they are on even level or perhaps for the first time at this level….even the favored team.

Having teams playing for real and beating each other up in a tourney mid season might be a bad idea. When the first domino falls and the first star player goes down with an injury during the tourney, then we'll see whether this was a good/bad idea…
