  1. Can be a real win win trade if the Panthers win the cup and the Hawks get a franchise Goalie and a Middle 6 Forward with the draft pick

  2. Jones at $7mil/season for 5 more years doesn't actually seem that bad. In Florida he will play less minutes on the 2nd pairing and his new role will match his reduced salary…

  3. I don't get it. Pay Montour 7m and you get to keep assets. Is Jones that mucch better than Montour? I don't think so.

  4. I think the hawks killed it, but did anyone tell them they don't need 4 goalies? I woulda offered to retain 3.5m if they'd take Mrazek back, 😂

  5. Hopefully this works the way it's supposed to. Zito will go out and get a tenured back-up before the deadline. Go Cats!

  6. Originally I didn't like the trade but I also didn't like the Tkachuk trade and how wrong about that I was…. Ekblad gets injured from time to time. And Chicago retaining so much has really made this a nice trade! Dreiger was real solid for us a few years ago and whilst I know that was then, I think he's still got it in his locker! Actually watching this vid brought me around to the trade more!!!

  7. Bill Zito doing Bill Zito things. Whenever a deal feels like it's almost not good enough for Panthers there are some aspects that makes it work so well. In this one the leverage this deal gives in future negotiations and the fact that they only pay 7 mil for him.

  8. Agree with you, Steve, I think both teams did well . I expect Jones to do very well in Florida

  9. Probably one of the most "square" deals I've seen this year. As a Wild fan, it doesn't really affect me, since I doubt we will see the Panthers in the Cup final anytime soon… so I'm excited to see how it shakes out for the Eastern Conference!

  10. the 2.5 million retained isnt that bad when you think about buyouts, Canucks are paying 4.5 million so that OEL WONT PLAY for them, more than the leafs are paying him to actually play

  11. The only thing Seth Jones really did was eat minutes. I think he’s way overrated. He’s not a number 1 defenseman and he brings the morale down in the locker room when the teams not winning. Lot of turnovers. Hawks win the trade all day long.

  12. I’m sad to see Knight go but we need Jones more now then Knight long term, sell high on Knight. I think Zito did the same with Huberdeau. He made some bad moves before on UFA’s and the retention on the contract makes Jones much more valued in FLA eyes.

  13. Its also a 2026 pick the Panthers are a contender this year say Bob gets hurt next season and they miss the playoffs that pick looks great.

  14. I like the return for Chicago. Knight seems like a pretty solid young goalie, hopefully his confidence doesn’t get ruined playing behind that team though.

  15. Per Bleacher Report….
“NHL teams only get temporarily relief when they place a player on LTIR. In the Panthers' case, Tkachuk and his $9.5 million cap hit are set aside for now. It would go back into effect once he's healthy.
McPherson explained how difficult removing him from LTIR will be.

"By doing this, it almost assuredly means Tkachuk's regular season is over because it would be nearly impossible to get cap compliant without trading away one of their core players—a move they could do without putting Tkachuk on LTIR—should they want Tkachuk to return before the playoffs," he wrote.

The NHL permits teams to be over the salary cap in the postseason, so Florida can add Tkachuk back to the active roster with no difficulty once the playoffs roll around.

While not always to this scale, utilizing LTIR to work around the salary cap is a relatively common tactic by general managers who have ambitions of a deep playoff run.
It's not as though the Panthers are falsifying an injury for Tkachuk. He hasn't suited up since the NHL season resumed after the 4 Nations Face-Off, a stretch of four games for Florida.

Being without the 27-year-old for the remainder of the regular season won't help the team's efforts in holding onto first place in the Atlantic Division, either. He's second on the Panthers in goals (22) and assists (35).

But if it was the difference between being able to afford Jones and failing to complete the trade, general manager Bill Zito showed he's willing to have Tkachuk out of the lineup for an extended stretch.”

  16. The bottom line here is that Florida, already the Cup champions, today have a better chance of repeating than they did yesterday.

  17. Wished that the Oilers enticed Florida to take Nurse, but Jones is better. The Oilers need a goalie of the future…Knight would have been an asset for them.

  18. I feel like the Seth Jones hatred amongst NHL fans has more to do with his term than his talent. Is he a top pairing defenseman? Not anymore. But he's not Cody Ceci.
