15mil in cap space plus the cap going up i expect a very busy dubas in the summer
Very fun day, nice coverage the last few days boys! I'm excited to see Novak tonight.
Luke Schenn's tribute video: Raw footage of his name being sewn onto the jersey. Told to call it off halfway through. Camera zooms in on jersey that says "SCHE" Crowd sheds a tear
I think he had good deadline Kyle Dubas. Essentially, Barry Trotz gave him an asset to flip in Luke Schenn, and recoup some more picks.
I personally like that they held onto Rickard Rakell. Yes the team isn’t going to the playoffs, but you still have 18 games left to play you still have to put a product out on the ice. I think Rakell’s value could go higher if he gets close to 40 goals. With a rising cap and his cap hit only being $5 million, GM’s will take that as a bargain. I also like the fact he didn’t budge on his asking price.
I would’ve liked to see Grzelyck traded, but I look at it this way, you traded Schenn for two picks and cleared $2.75 million in cap space and you’ll clear another $2.75 million with Grzelyck, so you’re clearing $5.5 million in cap space right there between two players and potentially, giving chances to some of these younger defense men to earn roster spots on the team next season.
I loved the work today from Kyle Dubas ever since the Jake gun trade last year. He’s been on a heater.
Yeah I've got no problem with anything Dubas did, he pretty much did what was expected, traded roster players for picks. Biggest surprise is Grzelcyk is still here. Pretty much every reporter and insider predicted he would be traded. As far as Rakell I trust Dubas' judgment, I'm guessing none of the offers were worth it, so keeping him is fine.
Let me ask you guys, when Fleury officially retires, do you think he’ll sign a one day contract to retire as a Penguin? I think it would be only fitting if he did
You think he did a lot
I think something that derailed a Gryz trade was the fact Schenn didn’t want to stay. I think they wanted Schenn to stay since he had the extra year to trade Gryz because POJ, Graves, Shea, and Kolyochenkov(sp?) being on the left side would have made Gryz expendable. But with Schenn going they had to keep someone.
I think what derailed a Rakell trade was 1. Hughes getting hurt cause I thought NJ could have gone after him for Mercer and a 1st given the trade market but they kinda went conservative buyer since Hughes is out for the season instead. And the 2nd thing that derailed it was that the Rantanen trade too way longer than it should have and apparently Tulsky doesn’t know how to work multiple phones at the same time like Dubas because they were apparently close to a deal but had to wait for the Rantanen trade to go through. And the 3rd was the kings went and used too much cap space so a 1st, Clarke, and Jeannot couldn’t have worked anymore as the deadline went on. As long as Rakell doesn’t go completely in the tank or get seriously hurt down the stretch, his value shouldn’t be much less than it is now.
Im in vegas right now getting ready for the game. Hopefully we win tonight!
I'm getting tired of seeing Mike Sullivan chewing gum on the bench.
I believe we got prospects from Toronto!
Take a moment to thank Barry Trotz lol
So much pens fans here
Not the biggest Dubas fan, but he absolutely schooled Trotz all year.
One thing to add… I do think Dubas is going to have to use some of these 31 draft picks to jettison the Jarry and/or Graves contracts at some point.
Do we think Luke Schenn was even around long enough to get the customary Crosby text
Looking ahead to free agency…Dubas has a lot of RFAs to resign and a few UFAs. I'd imagine he'll keep Tomasino(23), Bemstrom(25), Timmins(26), Dewar(25), Ponomarev(22), Gauthier(24), Kral(25), Hollowell(26), Ansons(23), Laferriere(24), Huntingdon(26).
He, probably, lets Joseph(25) walk again, without an offer.
The UFAs aren't really that impressive…Johnstone(28), Poolman(29), Nieto(32), Koppanen(27), Imama(28), Grzelcyk(31). He will, most likely, resign Clurman(26).
The Pens will still have a lot of depth in the system.
Glad Raks is still here, we need someone to actually score…
Thanks Schenn for your services, much appreciated and can’t complain too much about the outcome, got some high draft picks to play around with
Regarding Rakell, Dubas was right not to trade Rakell if the offers werent right; agree with Pats analysis of the summer and Rakell
Shhhh won’t mention the Vegas game 🤫
Let’s go pens 🐧🐧🐧🐧🐧
Great job guys…. A pretty good day for the penguins as long as Sullivan is not around to coach all these younger players… Believe me at one point I really loved Sullivan and all he did for the penguins but he is definitely no longer a good coach for this team sorry there's no other way around that… My biggest problem with Sullivan is he coaches like a pansy
Pens got a 2nd from Washington because they had to pay the "in division tax"
I’m so happy Ricky rocket is still with us for now I hope we keep him and don’t get rid of him for a silly deal where it wasn’t worth it for us
I am thrilled with this deadline. He collected players to flip them and executed that wonderfully. Im glad he didn't trade Raks just to trade him. The thing that excites me is that there is clearly a plan. Everything in the Hextall era felt very "fly by the seat of their pants." Dubas is very process oriented and you can see how the seeds he planted are starting to sprout.
A 2nd round pick is nothing. Only 36% ever see the NHL let alone pan out. 3rd round picks the ones they loaded up on… 13%… how much can you guys blow smoke is my only question? Acting like you rebuild in the draft like the NFL……. Only when its 1st round oddities like Crosby types does that happen
Just how much is dubas paying you guys to cover for the worst GM in hockey? I hope its alot
I’m more optimistic than most about this turnaround – especially after keeping Rakell.
There is a real world where the Rangers finish above 13 and the penguins have two first round picks at the draft.
There’s a real world where the penguins win the draft lottery, and pick Michael Misa first overall.
There’s a real world where that rangers, along with a third round pick, gets shipped to Toronto after a Matthew Knies offer sheet.
Nobody knows the leafs cap situation better than Dubas.
I know a lot has to go right, and then he’d actually have to offer sheet knies, but a starting top six next year consisting of:
Rust-Crosby-Rakell
Knies-Misa-Malkin
That is dangerous.
I think using the picks would make sense. The Pens are very early in the rebuild still.
Dubas did well. The Pens have a lot of picks now. There will be new guys coming up when the core retires.
AGAIN, 3 WORDS: LET. DUBAS. COOK.
Great points guys! I agree totally about Rakell. Don’t just trade him to trade him. They don’t have to. Has a near 40 goal scorer on a team friendly cap hit, so they deserve to get a giant package for him. I was surprised that Grzelyck was not traded. But I have a theory for it: Do you think there’s a chance they sign Grzelyck? If they’re really set that they want to trade EK65, they need someone to run the power play. Grzelyck obviously can do that really well. Letang obviously can’t do it anymore. I could be totally wrong but that’s my thought on that.
I thought for sure we were gonna trade Letang Malkin or Crosby. Why wouldn't we try to get something for these guys instead of let them retire penguins
I'm amazed at people(including so called insiders) who are crushing Dubas for his deadline deals. I'm no expert but I thought he did a great job. Not worried about Gryz, glad he kept Raks. No one probably wanted Acciari or Graves or were willing to pay his asking price. It happens.
Thank you guys for covering this
Poor barry trotz. Dubas is schooling him on the art of being a nhl gm this season. Trotz is responsible for 5 future draft picks for the pens, tomasino and novak. Bunting and 2 4th's back to nashville. Still cant believe trotz gave pens tomasino for a 4th. Complete fleecing. Tomasino hasnt been great but better then most 4th rd picks become. Work of art flipping schenn for a 2nd and 4th. Schenn's been a good defenseman but at 33 didnt exoect that kind of return for him. A 2nd for beauvillier. He's been ok but nothing special for the pen's. Great trade. Dubas killed it at this deadline. Now see if he can make these picks work drafting or packaging for young players
