With 4 players making over $10M, they need 2 goals from any of those 4 players every game. Because those players use up so much of the cap, there is minimal cap space for support players. If they don't get 2 goals from those 4 players every night, the Leafs likely lose. It puts a TON of weight and pressure on those 4 players, but that's what they are paid for. It's a major flaw in the construction of the team. If an opposing team can shut down the "Core 4", it exposes the lack of depth. Yes, this version of the team is still a good team, but as we've seen for the past 4 weeks or so, it's flawed. Honestly, they should have just saved their picks and Minten. They won't do much in the playoffs anyway. Should have made the big moves years ago when it was evident this roster construction doesn't work.

Age old problem, they cannot play as a unit. They always either break a stick, miss the pass or over skate the puck. Recipe for an early exit from the playoffs.
couple things my dad and i have noticed about austin matthews lately.
he has had the looks, some really good looks, where other players that make that type of money DO NOT MISS. like austin matthews had a chance in a recent game with a one timer at the side of the net where if that was ovy, 5 yrs ago stamkos, Draisaitl, and probably a handful of other players will never miss that chance. it will be buried 98% of the time. austin matthews misses those opportunities all the time.
austin hits more posts than anyone else in the league by a mile. or he'll just miss the net.
someone like nylander needs an average of 8-10 break-aways to bury one. sorry, but they just can't finish.
they make way too many mistakes where competent hockey teams will take advantage of and make them pay for it. however they themselves can hardly ever take advantage of their chances.
issue is toronto is keeping the wrong players, IMO. they do this with these ridiculous contracts they give out.

Matthews scored 15 goals in 22 games over December and January. That's a 56 goal pace. Over February and March he has assists but only 3 goals in 15 games. He has 3 goals over his last 17 games.
Leafs fan here. The only thing worse than watching the Buds lose to a team who’s currently “cap dodging” is being on vacation in southern Florida and having to watch their nauseating local broadcast.
It was like being held down by a bully while they make you slap your own face but in addition they were giving a play by play the entire time of how they were holding you down and making you slap your own face.

Asking this team to play north south is impossible because we don't have the forwards who can play that type of game. They're soft in the corners and couldn't win a puck battle if their lives depended on it. I think we just need to face the fact that this team is never going to get it done as constructed. Done.

It's very well-documented that Matthews is playing through injury (Likely Back) that can't simply be solved with rest & will require offseason surgery for him to return to 100%. The only reason we are still speculating is because of the Leafs' absolutely exhausting communication policy surrounding injuries where everyone is day-to-day and injuries are discussed in vague terms "Upper Body, lower body"
