If you’re going to make the case that “standing pat” made sense, then Yzerman was still wrong and should have sold if prices were that high. If the team is good enough to be in the playoffs then burning a second rounder isn’t a problem. A kid that might make a difference four years from now is worth less than making the playoffs if you think the team can contend.
Really the answer was he failed the trade deadline by not selling. Drafting 13th overall does nothing to really make this team better anytime soon.
I don’t think this team is close. Moving on from anyone over 25 is the move.
This offseason is going to be very difficult. This is supposed to be a weaker draft so it’s highly unlikely they will be able to draft anyone that can help immediately. The free agent class is on the weaker side and with the cap going up there are going to be more teams ready to spend that are more desirable landing spots than Detroit right now. The wings really need a top 4 left D to help solidify defense, and a star forward (especially if Kane leaves). These players are not found in free agency all that often and, outside of Marner, there are none in this class (and he’s not coming to Detroit). I wouldn’t mind seeing an offer sheet on a player like Mctavish, but I don’t see that happening. I just don’t think is going to be a great offseason to make major improvements externally. We’ll see though.
Should have attempted to move Kane and Tarasenko if there were "astronomical prices" being paid. That's the problem I have.
I think Yzerman’s entire off season went off the rails last season when Trouba refused to go to Detroit. Most of the guys on D had negative value, so he had to package Walman with a pick to make the move to open up space for Trouba and then the deal fell apart. He then got cute by letting Ghost walk and wanted to replace him with someone making half as much. Tarasenko just seemed like a desperate move to use some capspace and get a “win” after missing out on the actual target, Trouba.
Sooner or later, Yzerman needs to start the rebuild.
Honestly I think we are on track with what he wants. He wanted us to be "competitive for a wild card position" which we technically are. But also we somehow are in a position for a top 10 draft pick… And honestly I think that's exactly what Stevie Y wants.
i feel like when they got close to the playoffs last year, everyone expected them to make it. Even though no one had them making the playoffs at the beginning of last year. Now we come into this year with blue balls thinking they can get it done with an arguably worse team. two years ago they held a playoff spot a few times, but no one was surprised they lost it. where are these high expectations coming from? ottawa still hasnt made it and 2-3 years ago everyone talked about how they were ahead of us in the rebuild. look at buffalo, thats a shit rebuild. i feel like these takes are overreactions to a slow rebuild. the team looks bad, but no worse than you should realistically expect all things considered. theyll make the playoffs soon.
Fire the entire "pro scouting staff" including Steve Yzerman's brother. Bring in an experienced legit Director of Pro Scouting and let that person a pro scouting staff. Maybe let Kris Draper lead this hiring process.
I had no issue with Yzerman's decision at the trade deadline. He said he wasn't willing to trade away our prospects or draft picks to get someone today. The Yzerplan isn't about winning the stanley cup this season, it's about winning it in 5 seasons time, once all of our prospects are up in the NHL and playing to their potential. Yes it's taking a while, but I'm all for long-term gain.
If we barely clipped our way into the playoffs, everyone would be calling the Yzerplan "BRILLIANT!" and we'd be subject to another year of sub-mediocre play, after our first round loss in 4. We were riding high after Lalonde was given the portal, but three losing streaks cost us the playoffs this year and goaltending and slugs like Tarasenko keep us down. It's like the worst players said, "Hey! We like winning, but we also like playing the way we did for Lalonde", where we were in charge. It's time to gut the corps of dump and chasers. The D that can't clear the zone. The old guys who skate like Nancy Kerrigan after Tanya's pipe. We need energy. We need a goalie that can play well for 60 games and we need a new GM. Love ya Stevie, but 11 plus years without a playoff spot is all we're headed for.
Everyone says that Yserman doesn’t reveal anything, yet I have heard him say multiple times that he is building this team through the draft. The vets that he has brought in are on the team to teach the younger guys. Steve never said the goal this year was to make the playoffs, in fact he said they should compete, that doesn’t mean they should make it.
Had Steve spent assets at the trade deadline and they didn’t make the playoffs you guys would be complaining. Quit crying about not making the playoffs, when they would most likely get swept in the first round. Steve will buy when the team is ready to actually compete.
Basically, he needs to luck his way into a real number one center

It is time to accept the rebuild was over last year and this year we just didn't have the best team. We have a lot to look forward to next season. This year will be the first "black" mark on Yzerman's. This is the first year since he took over where the Wings did not ( will not) make more points than they did the previous year. I don't think he needs to be fired but I do hope he can figure out who to employee in net. We haven't had a good goalie since Vernon, Osgood and Hasek. Campbell was a bust. Cossa is having a rocky time in GR. So really Yzerman can't pick goalies. And DEF wise. we need more solid D man, I hope we are able to foster some more youth like MO and Simon. And i Hope Kane returns.
Some observations this year
– Pen Kill is terrible
– Vets didn't produce this year
– most of the D spent more time in the box than the ice
– Goaltending has been terrible all season.

And idk how Yzerman can "Swing" for the fences when players DO NOT WANT TO PLAY FOR DET,. We can offer 20 million and all our 1st around and 2nd around picks and the "best" players in the market are just not interested in DET. right now.

I don’t agree with the Marner take. He’s an expensive perimeter player who hasn’t been a difference maker come playoff time. That would be fine if we didn’t already have players in that same vain. They need a top 6 power forward. A front of the net guy who’s good in the corners that can skate in the top 6. I’d love to see Soderblom or Rasmussen make that leap. But Marner wouldn’t move the needle IMO.

I agree with being skeptical of the free agents for sure. But you don’t compound bad free agent signings with bad trade deadline overpays for regular guys. You don’t need to shoot yourself in the other foot too.
I hope Rasmussen gets moved this summer. Has been some decent trades with Fabbri and getting rid of Mantha. The Bertuzzi and Hronek trades gave us some key picks too. I would see what the Kings think about Alex Turcotte. Might be a reclamation project and plays Center which opens up flexibility.
Stevie Y started slow in his rebuild and still coasting. His scouts haven’t done a great job.
Just score goals and lose. We need draft position.. if we pack our farm, maybe they'll move some more people up.
We need a young, consistent goalie. Oh wait, we have and he won in a shootout and we haven't seen him in net since. Thats ONE example of guys we have that simply aren't playing in the winged wheel because this team develops players into infinity and sign old crusty dead weight instead.
