Also, how rediculous it is that Playoff goals don't count. Add in that Gretzky had 122 playoff goals and Ovechkin has 72 playoff goals for a more accurate count. That's an extra 50 that Ovechkin has to score to catch up to the real NHL goal scoring record.
idk i just dont see a record here. season is 2x as long now. there are more games and more teams per season, and the guys got how many empty netters? yeah. good job. beat that record at like 60 years old.

I really hope that, if they play at home and he is 1 or 2 away and they are winning, that the visiting team will just line up and let him score the last few more as a celebration than a battle. He deserves to get the record at home.
beating a gretsky record when his record is so above any other records in sports is pretty crazy. i remember when so many thought he couldnt do it or that it would take until he was 40 or 41. he's doing it earlier than anyone ever predicted. at 39 he has .65 goals per game, which is better than his career average of .6

This season Ovechkin is performing at a high level, he is on track to set a record for goals scored. And the previous two seasons he performed poorly, after all, age, but now at 39 he suddenly has so much energy, where did it come from?!
Alexander Ovechkin is not the player I want to see break Wayne Gretzky's Goal Scoring Record. Unfortunately, I have no choice. OV is going to do it. Not my favourite player in history. I might go and drink a bottle of OV beer. (Old Vienna) A beer in the 1980s & 1990s.
Flawed stats people. Sure Ovi is good, but Gretz didn't get all the overtime games like today. Neither did Gretz have a free pass over 2 lines. Thanks for your stupid rule changes Bettman. Go back to the NBA !
