This is so emotional for me. It’s all started in 2005 when I had to emigrate from Poland to the UK. I loved international hockey, watched championships featuring Poland, and was a huge fan of the NHL, but I didn't have my own team. Then came the draft in which the Capitals selected Ovechkin. From that year, when I left, I started staying up all night to watch Washington Capitals games.
When I returned to Poland in 2013, I came back with Ovi in my heart. To this day, I think I’ve watched 800-900 games. Due to the time difference between Europe and the US, it wasn’t easy. The seasons kept coming, incredible goals were scored, and there were heartbreaking disappointments in the playoffs. I'll never forget the series against Montreal when the Caps led 3-1, only to lose 4-3. There were more series like that – I lived through Ovi’s entire career: season after season, more and more goals, and more playoff heartbreak.
Then came 2018, when I literally cried as Ovi lifted the Cup. After so many years, I finally managed to fly to Washington, watched a practice in Arlington, and then saw a game against the Winnipeg Jets. That was when Ovi celebrated his 700th goal in the league.
Last night, I shed a tear again. Tying Wayne’s record – again in the middle of the night – was something I experienced all over again.
Thank you, Ovi, for 20 years of your career, your incredible games, and your goals. Thank you, Washington Capitals!!!
Ovies a top 35 best all time player. Points per game data shows that. Gretzky #1, Lemieux #2. Ovies not in their league but he’s a top 25 all time in my books. # 1 in longevity
I'm Canadian. Probably one of the few who doesn't really follow hockey much. But I loved watching this. I loved watching the celebration and respect of all the players and the sheer exhileration of the crowd. No politics. No grudges. Just excitement and admiration for an incredible athlete accomplishing a seemingly impossible feat – this is what I do love about sports. Congratulations, Ovie. Congratulations, Washington. DO NOT LET THIS MAN GO! Do what you need to do to make sure he is a Capital for life! Waiting for 895!

Somebody go get Don Cherry and Pierre MCGuire…lets play back the tape when they BOTH said he'd never keep up "that" scoring pace forever…
Fun fact: In 1989, Ovechkin's Dynamo Moscow played the Washington Capitals. The Russians won 7-2.
What a cool team it is, with a spirit of unity, understanding and mutual assistance. Ovechkin has such great partners. I'm proud of everyone.
GO G0 G0 SASHA!!! YOU'RE REALLY GREAT EIGHT 8!!! With LOVE and PLEASURE-Jean Tapin from Kazakhstan!!!
