This title is a curse. There’s a 49% chance the Sharks fall to 3rd which would suck. The next several picks after #2 are basically tossups
Sharks future is fine with either! But it’s not who we draft between them, it’s who we add after these picks!
If we get Schaefer I want Marner.
If we get Misa I want Byram.
Regardless of who we get I want Nemec this off-season and Allen or Andersen to start and eventually back up Askarov
Schaefer makes a lot of sense as defense is the weak point of the team right now. But imagining the potential of Misa on the second line with Chernyshov sounds like a lot of fun too (and keeping the Will and Mack line together).
Can’t go wrong with no 1 or no 2 pick really
As sharks fans we are bias towards fixing the blue line but Misa would be a nasty 2C. Also I think the timeline to the NHL for Misa is shorter.
I absolutely loved this episode! Funny and informative. It really helped filling in some gaps in my knowledge of them. Thank you JD!
I am in agreement as I have been almost all season that Schaefer is the first choice for the Sharks. Honestly, I am a bit disappointed that Scouch kinds made him sound really good but not great.
Still, it is clear Schaefer is what the Sharks need to almost complete their prospect pool. I have my thoughts on whether or not the Sharks could jump up to get Fiddler (who is the second pick I hope they make) as he would complete the prospect pool (IMO).
I would rather Hensler but he will be gone too early.
Still, if we get Misa, that has my mind going crazy with how hella good the forward position will be. Celebrini first line center and Misa second line center, oh my! lol!
Again, thanks for the episode JD. Looking forward to the episode that will cover if they are picking third. That is going to be one fun discussion to have!
The air has not been crisp ( this year )
Schaeffer or Misa is a no question win/win. The thing I want to know is who/what do we trade to Buffalo for their 7OA so we can draft Eky2.0?
The length of this episode makes me wish I went to work today. This would have been perfect for the hour long commute. It makes me so sad when I'm driving and he says "bye friends" I don't want him to go.
The thing about Schaefer is that he is a project. He’s the youngest player in the draft by far as a Dman and probably wont see an nhl game until the next of next season at the earliest. Misa would have an instant impact. But I do still personally think Schaefer is the best long term option and takes a lot of pressure off of Dickinson.
Imagine Schaefer and Dickinson as a future top 2 D men for them. That would be solid.
I looked at Tankathon, and they had the Sharks picking Bill Zonnon with their 2nd first round pick. The guy has great size, strength and athleticism. An intriguing player. Any other thoughts about him?
I think Chicago would prefer Misa, but I think if they get #1 they would take Schaefer.
I agree Misa should go to college next season. Do you think Schaefer should go to college next season ?
Our bald king almost got me on his side when he mentioned Crosby/Malkin and leave Smith to be Nylander. Almost. I still lean Schaefer, but they’re pretty equal. If this was the beginning of our rebuild or if we got Levshunov last year, I think I’d go Misa tho
Great show and guests, but it's pretty clear the answer is Schaeffer at one. This kid is still scratching the surface while Misa is kinda known and Smith is showing a lot of elite playmaking better than Misa imo. The real issue is the Sharks have higher odds at drafting 3rd and its glossed over when this would be the real debate. Pick or trade down for RD like Mrtka? I'd take BPA. But at 3, there's Hagens, Frondell, Desnoyer, Martone and Eklund then Mrtka who was ranked 5th as the top D… How big of a gap is there really between Misa and Frondell/Hagens for example, the latter is tearing it up in Sweden and Hagens played against older players in better league. Martone is Perry/BradyT upside. Desnoyer has Bergeron comp by some. Could have been way more interesting discussion. Maybe hopefully next time for JD?
Always take best player! Fill a major hole with the cap space.
I’m not taking a offensive defenseman with average d skills at one. I’ll take misa
One thing to keep in mind is that defense takes longer to develop and it’s not as if the sharks don’t have Dickenson and Cagnoni in their pipeline. I don’t think they would be wrong to take Shaefer, but the other argument is that they should just keep building the deep young forward core, let Dickenson, Cagnoni, and “Mook” continue to develop, and go out and sign a solid NHL veteran defenseman or two with their war chest of cap space.
Great stuff – I think Schaefer is the logical pick, but Misa is the one that gets me a little more excited.
Is it weird that I hope we drop to second so the decision is made for us? I mean you can’t really go wrong either way. One argument that actually did catch me a bit is that you’ve got 12 forward positions to fill and only 6 defensive ones. A lot easier to fill 6 than 12. It’s an interesting thought. I’d honestly be happy with either.
It all depends. Needs.
Let us assume that either Chicago or San Jose gets the first pick and that the other team gets the second.
The order between the two should not matter.
Looking at the Sharks system, we have a lot of forward prospects that look to be very good.
On defense we have Dickinson who looks to be very strong, but that is our only very highly rated defense prospect.
Looking at the Hawks system, they have a lot of defense prospects that look to also be very good.
However their forward core after Bedard doesn't have a whole lot.
So the Hawks have a lot of defense and not many strong forwards.
The Sharks are the reverse with a lot of forwards but not much on defense.
The Hawks should take Misa because that is what they need.
The Sharks should take Schaefer because that is what they need.
The two are close enough I don't see it as a mistake to take either, but your team can massively benefit from one more than other.
I don’t mind if we don’t get the first pick in the draft if it gives us a shot at #1 next year I want Gavin Mckenna
What we are not talking about is the real probability of drafting #3 There are a interesting mix of players that would be intriguing. A lot of people are not talking about Anton Frondell who put up an impressive second half of his season against men after a slow start due to injury. A year ago there was lots of talk about Frondell and Hagens going #1, I think Frondell would be an excellent #2C he just has a high puck skill level and a tremendous shot.
Ecklundddd. Jk. Shae has to be it.
If Schaefer is picked #1 overall, he should be expected to be a #1 defenseman for your team at some point. If he is picked #1 for the Sharks and he is ultimately on the 2nd pair playing 20 min a game, thats a wasted pick.
