Knies the player? Sure. The Leafs have too much cap space and would match anything to keep him.
The only viable RFA targets are
-Bouchard, who could easily be had with $10m+ and would be worth it (is a top ten Dman in the league worth that compensation?)
-Maverik Borque. Dallas has only $5m in cap space with five or six roster spots to fill. You could snatch him away easily without much a fight and without losing a first.
-Cuylle and Miller from NYR. New York has five roster spots to fill with just $9m. You could probably trap the Rangers into choosing who to keep and who to let go by offersheeting both. They don't have very many movable contracts to clear up space right now.
Which recent Wings second round pick wouldn't you give up in a deal for Niese or Bouchard? And forget about the 3rds 😂😂😂

Overpaying now early, but as the cap continues to rise, this will not be overpaying. Players are expected to get contracts 10% higher than they would have gotten last year. Also why some have talked about shoring up contracts with players like Edvinsson sooner than later to get them at a better contract cost. Why getting Raymond and Seider for $8mil for a lengthy contract was huge, too!

Knies is a very specific type of Maple Leafs player: The Zack Hyman type.
He boosts and is elevated by playing with Toronto’s elite forwards by playing a specific role around those talents. Detroit does not have the horses or system to see him succeed.
Knies at $9m/7years for a 1st/2nd/3rd next year? Done
