The summer he left us is the year he got married. I will continue to believe that he wanted to sign with us, but that his girlfriend was not happy here on Long Island and wanted him back home in Toronto. There was a noticeable change in him when he came back from the Christmas break that year. He was completely disengaged like he had already made up his mind, psychologically that he was out of here.
Having said that nothing made me happier than to watch Toronto lose in game seven. And not only lose but suffer their worst game seven home loss in Toronto history.

no truer words are spoken then this. If you do not have character and integrity YOU WILL NOT SUCCEED in any walk of life. Tavares flat out lied to the islanders. The islanders not only drafter tavares but they paid him well for the 9 years he was here. The islanders really took care of the player and then how does tavares repay the islanders.? By flat out deceiving the islanders. This is EXACTLY why bill torrey and al arbour were BOTH on the same page that a priority is that you look for character and integrity in drafting and obtaining players via trade etc. After what tavares did to the islanders i knew there was 0% chance he will ever win a cup with any team. Who said he's done in Toronto? He's 34 and still very effective. 38 goals and 74 points are very good numbers. He's also a +10 and 59% on faceoffs.

Given where we were as a franchise at the time we had to take him number one overall but Hedman was the better, more impactful player. He's slow and has been a good but not elite point producer.
