Good luck Caniacs. Looking forward to the series as a Panthers fan. Two similar styles, It might just come down to who wants it more. Go Cats
Im learning so much from your videos! Thanks as always!
Excellent breakdown Coach, really enjoy your nuanced and rational takes as opposed to most of the 'hot take' merchants we see on big media. However, as a Canes fan, and I'm hardly objective, I'd like to add some details.
Your point about Burns is right on target, he's definitely showing some age this year, but arguably still skates better/stronger than a majority of the Dmen in the NHL. Most importantly, during the playoffs, he's stepped it up- He continually harassed and bodied Ovi during the Caps series, and was one of the primary factors in neutralizing him. I don't think he's holding anything back now, and more on the physicality later.
I can understand the Marchand love, but allow me to retort: Really? REALLY?!? Seriously, the guy is a gamer, but I think if you check the films you'll find that against the Canes, he's simply average. Our system is kinda what he does as a player, and against this fast, harassing defense he hasn't had a ton of success. Hard for him to make an impact when he's gasping for air.
Now, here are my objective factors that give the Canes a substantial edge in this series, the 4H, which I'm not sure you addressed.
Home ice- we have it, and whether it's because of line matchups or our barn, it's statistically hard to ignore.
Hits per game- You mentioned that FLA would attempt to physically wear us down, and I agree. However, unlike in years past, this playoffs the Canes have committed to a physical forecheck/backcheck in addition to hounding the puck. We didn't play like this during the regular season, so it's a measurable example of 'showing a different level'. Surprisingly, the Canes outhit both NJ and the Caps in almost every game, and we have the depth to support a continued commitment to the strategy. Nikishin, in particular, is an eraser, and will do some damage if he plays. Unlike Slavin or Burns, he will focus on hitting an offensive player entering the zone rather than stick-checking. Who will win a war of physical attrition?
Health- the Canes are healthier across the board than any other postseason, and FLA is not. Not only did they just complete a 7 game series, several of their top players are dinged up. In particular, Tkachuk is not 100%, and he was the difference last time.
Hot PP- Again, contrasting previous years, and things analysts 'know' about the Canes, our PP has been highly effective in the playoffs. RBA gave it a test run after the trade deadline, tweaked some things, and then rested guys until the playoffs. I'd love for you to break it down, but it starts with zone entry by Aho and Jarvis bringing it in together, which has worked well. Adding an effective PP to their killer PPK helped the Canes not just win, but dominate both series.
As some guy said, 'To be the man, you gotta beat the man', and that's what this is. I like the Canes in this series, but the games aren't played on paper. Thanks for your efforts in making quality content, I look forward to more technical game breakdowns.
are the quick cuts to avoid copyrights? Would like to see the play developed a little more. But this is very helpful.
I think we can all agree as long as an american team from a "small market" wins and it's not a Canadian team 🙂
It was great to see you on on Ovies and Giglio! I had no idea how impressive your credentials are!
NHL media would absolutely praise Florida doing the same thing as the canes. Why do they hate us so much?
As always, love your analysis. Also thoroughly enjoyed your appearance on the OG yesterday. As a Canes fan, I love this team. Truly a great "sum of their parts" team. They play the right way and are the furthest thing from boring to watch, in my opinion. My heart says Canes in 7 with home ice getting us over the hump. However my head looks up and down that Panthers lineup and just shaking my head at all the talent. Canes are fast and scrappy and will get a punchers chance. Hoping they shock the world. Go Canes!!
Let's go Canes! 🌀 I have faith that we have what it takes. Freddie being rock solid and healthy has been key. Our top 6 are so underrated and overlooked by analysts and a lot of our d pairs are written off as just average. Thank you for giving us the credit where national broadcasters and analysts sell us short.
Best retool year of all time
Love your videos, so just to help you with some names… 😉
nih-KEY-shin (overhyped, but I'm excited to see more of him)
coat-can-e-emi (but said very smoothly—each sound is short)
Svechnikov—no "shv" at the start, it's a very defined "sv" sound, then a hard ch, like in "etch," but without the t.
Martinook—like "cook" (prepare food) or "nook," not "cook" (crazy person) or "nuke."
Not a name, but "chasm" is pronounced with a hard K sound, like "cast." Just pretend the h doesn't exist.
As a Canes fan, I'd like to win the first one and then everything else past that would be gravy. Did not expect the boys to make it to ecf this year, so happy for them and the unity they're showing after the garbage they had to listen to all season from media talking heads.
Usually the canes run svech aho blake and swap him in and out with jarvis. The lines are set on the opening faceoff and are shuffled the second rod doesn't like what he sees lol
This series hinges on Andersen playing as well as he has been. Bob will be Bob, and the canes have to have that elite goaltending to match. Second, aho must be good and he has to do more than always look to pass. Aho has to shoot well. Third, canes PP has to continue to do well. 4th… the xfactor… what do the refs do? If they let Florida do the shady crap they do, it's going to be a tough slog. And of course, the pk staying elite has to be a given.
Carolina has had easiest way to conference finals this year, so they are well rest. Also Cats has good situation with players but still, there is little edge for Carolina.
And you are 100%, the media will laud Florida for putting pucks on net while crapping on the canes for doing the same thing
The Canes fanbase isn't very likable. Go Cats!
As a Panther fan I can't say Carolina is an underdog at all . They've been a contender for almost a decade now. That's a well run franchise and they have talent but they also play a very intense and disciplined system. It wouldn't surprise me at all if they beat Florida. Obviously hoping they don't. Go Cats Go!!!
What's interesting about the Panthers is that they don't have any crazy ringers
I like my Cats in this one, obviously.
We need to absolutely hammer them into submission.
“Dirty” is what the haters like to say… playoff hockey is what it actually is.
I think our 3rd, and even our 4th line, is the difference again.
I don’t think their top line can handle Barkov (not many can).
But Verhaeghe needs to make his presence felt in this series… he’s not been the factor this year that he has in the past.
Crash the net and scoop up those Freddie Rebounderson bounces!
Seth Jones is getting better every game and growing in confidence.
I wasn’t convinced when we first signed him, but I like his development.
Most importantly, do everything possible to make it a short series because both teams in the West are terrifying!
(Although I think this series goes 6 or 7)
GO CATS!
🐀🏒🔥
I think the Panthers dominate the Canes. Canes beat a banged up Devils and a Capitals team that depended heavily on their PP.
I don't think it is. The hurricanes are hot.
Whichever team emerges victorious from the ECF, they will be battered and spent. And have to face a juggernaut in the SCF after going through an extremely taxing series.
Carolina is like Toronto. Toronto can't make past the 2nd rd while Carolina can't make it past the 3rd round. Florida in 5.
Marchand is a fuckin rat but he can play some goddamn hockey. Much as I cant stand him I will never downplay his skill
Maurice changes his lines all the time so saying if its right or wrong is both correct. Mikkola and Kulikov tend to play together more as the game goes on. Nosek might come out if Strum gets healthy. I see Canes saying the things they have this time that makes them better. Here's what FL has that they didn't have 2 years ago. 1. Playoff Experience. 2. Stanley Cup Experience. 3. Multiple years playing Maurice's system(not just an almost disastrous season) 4. Lundell, Marchand, Eetu with years of NHL experience now along with confidence defense and play making. 5. A healthy D Core with backups, not over aged D guys. 6. Deeper team overall. There where some old men on that Panthers team, very slow. 7. Pressure relieved because they proved they can win it all. 8. Playoff Bob. Yeah he sucks during the regular season and sometimes plays well. Has more great games than bad games in a 7 game system. His numbers always suck, but he tends to face less shots than other goalies per game. His GAA is decent compared to others. His Save percentage takes a shit because he doesn't make 40 saves a night to erase the 2 that went in. Its 2 goals, on 23 shots. Then add in one of those FL Panthers bleep shows, 6 goals on 15 shots. There goes that Save Percentage.
Picked Carolina VS. Dallas before the playoffs to reach the SC finals, because I felt my Cats would be exhausted from the three long runs the past couple of years, and then this year, but I feel the Oilers are playing out of their minds, and my Cats look good, but much respect to Carolina! Go Panthers!
I did. As a Finn follow very carefully how Finnish players perform in nxt round.
So far so good.👍🇫🇮
By the way, Finland with only 4 NHL players beat Canada 2-1 in round robin.
It was a huge suprise, but this season that has happened in NHL too!
Love how pretty much every outlet has the Canes losing 4-1. The only team that won both their previous series' 4-1. Because the Caps weren't that good a team, right? 😂
