No idea who thinks this team is set in goal . We have to 2 backup goalies who haven't proven anything ……
I'm more critical of Matthews than Marner when it comes to playoff performance.
Matthews is a beast, 6'3" and around 220 lbs…, and has ZERO passion or truculence in his game.
If you noticed Marner in the handshake line-up, there is no way he is 6' tall and 180 lbs like his personal stats say.
Marners like 5'8" on a 3-day sleep-in and is what he is. A skilled little player. Nothing else.
It’s ridiculously frustrating that this Leafs team could be so Jekyll and Hyde. So great one game, collapsing the next. And while the loss of Stolarz was a hit to their chances, you can’t even blame his loss for going down the way they did. Clearly, the team had all the pieces to make it all the way. But for some reason, in the big moments, they lack the killer instinct needed to put their opponents away.
As for changes, honestly, I’d trade Matthews. Yes, injuries seem to have played a part in his less than stellar post season, but that seems to be the case every season and it’s a tired excuse at this point. You look at captains of Maple Leafs past, and none of them ever used injuries as an excuse. Sure, they might have lost, but they went down fighting. Matthews clearly doesn’t have that kind of fight in him, and I think they should move him to get something decent in return towards a rebuild.
As for the others, I could see Tavares back on a deep hometown discount. Marner, I’d attempt a sign and trade, otherwise let him walk. Nylander was probably the most productive of them all overall and I’d give him one more shot on a rebuilt roster. Rielly has given up too many big turnovers in playoff games, and overall, he’s just not the player he used to be and has to go. I’d re-sign Tanev and Knies.
And last, but not least, the Leafs need to fire Shanahan. The Shanaplan has been a dud, and he can go kick rocks.

I like how you say underperform! You are in fact correct!… we wanted them to underperform in the first round! Just two OT losses they luckily won 😮💨 but they performed perfectly when we got that game 7 loss ❤ and game 5… 🙂

Nine years. Ownership is happy with the money they made. Marner will be happy if they or someone else pays him again. This team is aging out and has no obvious path forward. They could have reset a few years back. Now it will just be a struggle as they get incrementally worse and then need to rebuild again.
Nobody said the Leafs had any chance of winning the cup this year. No one.
I expected them to lose versus Ottawa.
Like they did to Columbus. Like they did to Montreal. 2-9 in playoff series in the last nine years. 0-7 in deciding games in series losing 7-4 to Boston, 5-1 to Boston 3-0 to Columbus in a five game series in game 5, 3-1 to Montreal, 2-1 to Tampa Bay, 2-`1` in overtime to Boston again and 6-1 to Florida.
It's genetic for this group. They can't win a coin flip game to save their lives.
The goaltending was lucky to get through this year. Does that happen again. The team is old, especially the defense. How much do they degrade? Matthews has some sort of nagging injury that can't be fixed by surgery. What if he is limited to being a 35 goal 75 point player ???

The Leafs were not prepared to go the distance, to be sure, but let’s also face the facts, the Panthers have their “A” game working for them now (as evidenced by last night’s performance against Carolina).

I think losing Stolarz is what did it in for them.
Not only was he their amazing starting goalie that got them through the first round but he’s also a very loud player on the ice helping dictate play.
Losing that voice in your own end definitely had a negative effect, on top of not having him in net to stop pucks
I truly believe that stolarz getting knocked out of the series (literally) is a big reason the leafs lost. Woll played well but not well enough. Yes Matthew’s and marner were no shows but I believe if stolarz were in play the leafs would have won game 3 and with a 3-0 series lead they would have taken the series! I don’t care what anyone else says that is the reality of it!
Florida has a team of hockey players, the Leafs have a team of guys who play hockey. Notice the difference?

Ironically this was their longest run but one of their worst versions of this team the last decade. Their underlying numbers were so bad. The sad part is they had some years where they had absolute stacked teams and they wasted them. That’s what hurts the most.
This year proved that Marner, Mathews, Nylander and Tavares are and never were that guy. That goes a long way when you hit the market or even consider trading the player.
The Toronto Make Beleafs never fail to fail. This is what happens when you spend half your cap on 4 forwards.

The other thing they can't sign all because they have only 26.8m available next year and they need a couple of bottom six to resign. Ex. Marner 13.5m , tavares 7m, knies 7m = 27.5m and they need a least 2-3 to sign more forward

You are so right. The core 4 have created a duality in team. Soft sort of prima donna in the core 4 and then the other guys are more gutsy and performing better. Not something that is healhty for a team or an organization. Must be stopped. Marner out – send him to new york rangers or Utah…. I dunno the ducks. Let Marner walk , trade Nylander and Reilly , re-sign JT for cheap and Knies and move on. Nylander is a floater (there's a reason he gets so many break aways) , Reilly is soft , gets beat too easily and doesn't use his size , he never has. Leafs need depth at center and more snot all around including a banger on D. Loads of FA centers available this year and some interesting D-men. Its also time for some prospects to push for a spot or two.
I'm not a Leafs fan at all. But you're wrong about tossing the jerseys on the ice. The fans are completely entitled to be angry. They tried, with their very hard to earn Canadian dollars, to support this team. They've done it for decades and nothing has changed. Throwing your jersey on the ice and never buying another ticket are the most effective forms of protest for a franchise that deserves nothing more.
I’m sorry but this narrative of the fans both scaring the team’s execs into inaction and then also being too hard on the team on the ice is such monumental crap. No other team in the league has people blaming the fans for why the team on the Ice is failing. If you can’t perform when the lights are bright you can’t perform I’m so sick and tired of this no other sport in the world has this mentality “the fans are so mean and ravenous.”
