summarize:
The Wild bought out Parise and Suter and tried to win with limited cap space instead of tanking for top picks. Unless they rally this season, they haven’t gotten to the second round since 2014-15.
Guerin has locked in Boldy, Eriksson Ek, and a core of aging, declining players who haven’t advanced in the playoffs. Meanwhile, he played hardball with his franchise player, Kaprizov, and dragged his feet with Rossi.
Minnesota’s prospect pool is its greatest strength. However, the Wild could have doubled down on it by bottoming out to get better picks. Instead, they’ve tried to win while in cap hell and recently traded a second-round pick for a player in his mid-30s. Furthermore, they’ve prioritized veteran experience over young players with upside.
The Wild will benefit from increased cap space after this season. Still, they won’t change their fate unless they change their methods. Minnesota will need cost-controlled players with upside after extending Kaprizov under the new cap. They already have $75.9 million committed to next year’s roster, and most of their core has long-term deals with no-trade clauses.
So if all these rosters mistakes have been the result of 6 Years under Billy, what makes pundits and Organization so sure he is the correct person to undo or correct the mistakes
Yurov, Heidt, Jiricek, Buium
Regardless of specific cap space, the Wild have the ability to do some shopping on July 1. This is a make or break year for Guerin.
Light Zack's name on fire? He busted his rear for this franchise. Shame on you Seth
5 spots? I say 6 but still not the same team
Kaprizov makes anyone you put on his line better. I’d argue he’s just as good of a playmaker as scoring forward. Boldy is a possession forward slippery, strong, with scoring abilities. The 1C conversation is simple, unless you run into a situation where there’s a team willing to part with one, there’s not one available today. Option, aging top 6 center or split Kaprizov and Boldy, supplement with complementary players and run with current centers on roster while waiting for either one to become available or develop one. I believe Marco could be that center but clearly the Wild have reservations. As far as BG, let’s see what happens, like most things it’s complicated.
Can they use the money to hire a coach for the PK? Or maybe face offs? Make sure they contact Louis Nanne for that video on blocking shots
Why is every new person coming on the roster supposedly the missing link or what the wild need or what will change this team. It's becoming insanity at this point….BG is the cancer in the organization. What has BG to show since 2019….NNOOOTTHHIINNGGGGG.
I don't think Jespervis ready for the NHL
Yurechek cant skate. Hes a 7 th dee
I still cannot fathom why tf Billy decided it was such great idea to sign Trenin (at best borderline 3rd liner) to 4 years at 3.5 million. Horrendous contract.
Seth – are there any confirmed reports that the Wild are looking to trade Rossi?
Minnesota isn’t a destination so the challenge of attracting a high end free agent that isn’t 30+ remains. Having Kaprizov helps.
The clock on billy g starts now. He needs to havve a fantastic off season no more old and slow
Great show Seth keep on keeping on!
I feel sad Merrill will be gone. Good dude.
Also excited for Jiricek. I really hope he pans out.
Rossi 💯 gone!
Spurgeon or Brodin or Middilsted, one of them I think is gone in a trade with Rossi plus a pick for top line C1
Reckless speculation!
Connor Dewar and Nico Sturm are both UFA's. Familiar and cheap for the 4th line. Sturm is solid on the draw and awesome on the PK.
Seth, I asked Denny this question (which is in fact an opinion about which I'm curious what you think). This team's real core is a group of 9 (ish) players who are under the age of 25 (Boldy, Buium, Faber, Jiricek, Yurov, Ohgren, Heidt, Walstedt, and for now, Rossi). They have 3 key players who are between 27-30, most notably Kaprisov, but also Gustavson (26) and Middleton). They have 3-4 players 30 and over who are fairly key also, the best of those is Brodin, but also Spurgeon, Foligno, and if you want to include them, Hartman, Zuccarello, Gaudreau but I wouldn't. Zuc has one more year, and Gaudreau and Hartman are useful but not key. The point is, this team, assuming it can develop it's talent, can compete for 6-8 years on that core OR, it can sign Free Agents who are 28-32, and compete for 2-3 years (assuming they trade players like Heidt, Rossi, or Ohgren). I think that would be a HUGE mistake. Teams that win, develop their own talent, which is something so far that Guerin has not done. So, I'm curious, do you agree they should promote their young players to the big team and develop, or do you support trading 2-3 of those core and signing someone like Brock Nelson or Boeser.
Sign Rossi 7×7. Sign Yurov ELC. That leaves you 9m to get one more guy or two cheaper ones. (I prefer one expensive one). You can't afford Marner. Probably can't afford Bennet (but maybe). Boeser always gets hurt only playing 70+ twice in 8 years. Ehlers is fast and interesting. If Yurov is truly a center you go for a scoring wing. If Yurov will be on the wing you go Center. I vote go sign Bennet at 9×7 (cause that is what it will take to get him out of FL). Your top line should then be Kap-Rossi-Ohgren (Kap drives the play, Ohgren big body, Rossi the setup for both). Line 2 – Yurov-Bennet-Boldy (Big line, heavy but offensive… almost 1A). 3rd line – Hartman-Eek-Zucc (all great sticks, all good shutdown with an offensive punch). 4th line – Trenin (if not hopefully traded) – Freddy – fill in the blank NOT named Nyquist, Mojo or Brazeu. That's depth and youth. Also might be the best 3rd line in the NHL. Eek for Selke (if he can stay healthy).
