  1. As players on the roster age, but can be a good piece for other teams, you have to look at the opportunity. We tend to fall in love or hate with players but as I was told a long time ago by the Alouettes trainer, Dan Diebert, "players will come and go and they are only needed as long as they perform". Other than building a team culture, the business aspect takes precedent.

  2. Strubble seems to have no long term future in the Habs line up, so with a low salary would be a good asset to return in this trade. Vegas may want to add a young prospect at a cheap cap hit. And then add a or picks. I would give our 17th first round to get such a great Dman for many years to come.

  3. I would trade Matheson for Hague in a heartbeat, we don’t need another offensive defenseman, Hutson is our guy also the role we had Matheson in isn’t ideal since he’s offensively minded.

  4. Completely agree with the notion that Arber xhekaj would be the odd man out. many Habs fans do not want to say that out loud but it makes sense .my first reaction when I heard about this story was Hague would make Arber expendable , so I agree with Shaun

  5. While we are wondering whether we can get the 2C with the first rounders, I think a guy like Matheson can be the main piece in the package. A veteran with offensive ability and is in his prime . I can see why they are looking at Hague.

  6. Have you ever noticed that Toronto media often talk about the Habs but Montréal media never talk about the Leafs (except when it's something big, certainly not rumours)

  7. The Canadiens are not in the market for Nicholas Hague in any serious way.

Maybe consider this scenario as the reason why Montreal seems to be attached to so many off-season rumours…

Kent Hughes is the kind of GM who believes that it his job to consider and explore every possible trade or signing. If a player is available, he feels that he would be derelict in his duties without engaging in some discussion about it.

So, word starts spreading that Vegas is shopping Nicholas Hague, and Hughes feels compelled to make a telephone call – maybe Kelly McCrimmon is looking to dump players and Montreal can get an asset by taking on Hague's AAV. More than anything though, calling MCrimmon helps build a relationship with Las Vegas for future dealings.

Then, word leaks out that Hague is on the market and that Pittsburgh and Montreal have inquired. Nick Kypreos, despite the fact that the rumour makes absolutely no sense at all, publishes it in the Toronto Star in an effort to be relevant as an insider (with no source, let alone confirmation). Canadiens fans and media run with it and all of sudden a trade is in the works between Montreal and Las Vegas.

This scenario also explains most of the non-sensical rumours we are hearing about the Canadiens – Crosby, Marner, Horvat, Robertson, Rossi, etc.

  8. I don’t think we’ll get a 2C this summer, maybe on the free agent market if the price is right, for a temporary solution. I think that Hughes will try to solidify right D, and try to advance in the draft, or draft 2 players that could become home runs, say Bear that would fall because of his injury. I think they will be comfortable this season watching what could Dach do with Demidov, and act in 2026 if it fails. I honestly can’t see why we’d have a worst season this year with Demidov in the line up and without the mess we had at the beginning of last season.

  9. Trade Matheson? Not unless there is someone else who can eat those minutes. The disrespect Matheson gets is crazy. He didn't complain losing PP1 and became a good PKer.

I wonder if Hague could be acquired for Struble. Struble would be much cheaper that Hague for VGK.

  10. So, the Habs are looking for a bigger blue line corps. Tell me again, why was Johnathan Kovacevic moved out?

  11. Rumor's out there that the Canadiens are pushing for Arber to move to forward. He would be good on 4th line and maybe soon his younger brother joins him that would be a nasty line to play against. Also this means if a Dman gets injured then Arber could move back to defense for the game.
Brent Burns used to flip flop from D to F as did Byfuglien

  12. Twenty six year old Nic Hague is an RFA this year and due to be a UFA next year. Vegas has $9.6 million in space. Montreal has $6.1 million in space. I guess Vegas is looking to create space to sign a better player but not signing Hague doesn't make them cap space. Unfortunately Hague might not cost too much player wise, but he's probably looking for a lot of money to give up any UFA years. He is a year away from being a UFA. So how much are you paying your big third pair left defenseman ?
    4$ million?
I am a big Hal Gill, Joel Edmundsen fan. Hague in six years has played one full season.

  13. Big question, why they didn't keep Kovacevic, he was a big dependable right Dman.

  14. You won’t find a better fighter than Arber and the mentality that gives the team can’t be replaced just because Hague is big

  15. Like you said – The danger becomes that we start piling up too many depth pieces. Look at Dallas they had three lines of second liners and Karlsson feels like a third liner to me now. I would rather go all in on Jason Robertson. I would also keep Matheson depending on what he wants since our prospects in Laval do not seem to have the ceiling we originally thought but Matheson needs a dependable partner with a good first pass to help him so he’s not all alone when he’s bringing up the puck. Especially since passing isn’t his strong suit. Hague? But it would be a nice third pair on a cup contender. Now we just have to find two more top four defenseman hopefully Reinbacher is one of them.
