Utah fan here, just wanted to stop by and say you guys will love Kesselring. Think he’s being criminally underrated in these convos. I think he’ll be pair one for you by end of season. Massive agile RD with a super heavy shot. Kess and Doan were 2 fan favorites here.
Get Gavrikov, Helleson, if possible. Byrum + Norris for Edvinsson + something. Byrum + Norris for Weegar + something. F-it add Benson, Quinn, Lafferty, Malenstyn or Krebs into one those deals (hands off Kulich). Get FA Pat Kane 👍 🏒
What if the rumors that the Red Wings wanting Byram is true. Would they give up Marco Kasper in that trade? Because here is the thing. The 2 players they got in the JJ take they have very good possession numbers. Add in Kasper who can be a #2 Center with also good Possession numbers.
If the Sabres become a better possession team Because right now they have a 3rd line that can do that. The 1st line can also do that with Tage, Kulich and Benson. Their Possession numbers were good. You put Kasper, Doan and Tuch together you have another good Possession line.
If you look at the D they traded for Bernard Docker and Kesselring also have very good possession numbers. Then when you dig in even more you will see players that have a higher on ice goals for vs goals against.. Now some are just a tenth of a point higher with goals for goals against. However ALL these players are showing On Ice Goals against is lower than 2.7
So let me say this what if the team that is being built will have around a 2.7 or lower GAA for Both Goalies we have and around a .910 SV% or Better? You get to be top 15 in Defense next year and Middle of the pack or higher in GAA and SV%? Wouldn't this be closer to a Playoff team that way?
Because everything I see digging into the advance numbers of Doan, Kesselring, Norris, and Docker everything says this team will have better possession numbers because all of these players play a possession game. And their Goals for and Goals Against will be much closer than they have been in the past. Leading me to believe having less blowing a 5 goal lead. Now I think we will not get many. However if we have win games 3 to 2, or 2 to 1 most of the time. We will be a better team.
kesselring and swap out 1st round picks this year would have made the deal better…doan, to me will be a 3rd or 4th liner…it's tough to let a guy go who scored 28 and 27 goals the past 2 years…hopefully adams can lure a free agent or two that can make up for the production we just lost in peterka…but as it stands, utah got the better deal

I don't hate this trade, though I absolutely, agree the Sabres shouldn't make it so easy for players under team control to go. Also, I said just this morning that the Sabres are going to end up with a team of third and fourth line grinders.

While Joe was making ridiculous mock trades, some of us were saying that these trades were going to largely be salary dumps to get to their personal cap number of $6-8 mil under the cap. There's no other way to shine or polish this. If Kesselring and Doan made more money, would they have seriously been the choices? Of course not, it would have been someone else that was cheap. This team needs guys with relevant NHL experience, and well, not happening here. What exactly is this team's identity anyway? Try to sneak into the playoffs just once to get people off their back?
A mammoth fan here and can say you will be happy in the future with your 2 new players. They will give you 100% every game with hear and soul. Good luck to your fan base.

I agree with you Joe, they shouldn't have traded him. He was an RFA and so make him pout for another year. I am happy with getting a big RHD that they wanted. However him and Doan I don't feel was fair value for JJ. Keeping in mind that Buffalo is not a destination city for most players, this may have been the best they could get. The biggest thing that gets me is that they mainly went for Kesselring but he will only be possibly a Sabre for 1 year. He will be a RFA next year…so we are back to square one. I can still see Joes face flushed when he talked about the Rossi potential esp when he said they were willing to throw in more than him for JJ.

Sabres got bigger/tougher/defensive. Lost a great scorer but a poor defender. I'll take this trade. I'm tired of rooting for tiny players with no grit.
Out here in California, I am convinced there are a lot of businesses that launder money because they never have customers. I think my Sabres are laundering money, they develop great players, then BOOM trade them when they want money they deserve. We blow.
