Tavares showed up to that presser to announce Matthews as the next captain with his sons in Matthews jersey's, with the C. Pure class. Guy loves the Leafs and I'm stoked he'll finish his career here. What a beauty!

Despite the at times negative press JT receives from the media(social media has dragged this guy through the mud at times)-he has been a class act during his tenure with Toronto.He handed over the captaincy without any whining and you never hear him bad mouth anyone on his team or any team for that matter.This deal is truly a hometown discount deal-he gave the Buds the last two years trade clauses making it easier to move him if management feels it necessary to do so.

Let's be objective here. He wants to be here and that's what Treliving and the Leafs are comfortable with. IF he wanted more money, he would need to supplant his life and family for a few years and then come back? Let's not make it out to be completely altruistic.
Glad he's a Leafs though; I like him as a player and person from what he has shared on that side of things but it's a mutually beneficial transaction.
