Simon Holmstrom: 2 years, $3.5 million year one. $3.75 million year two. I'm alright with this signing. The kid improved last season. As a result, he received a show me contract. Show me you can do this again or, better yet, surpass your output from last season. Let's see if the kid is on an upward trajectory, or if he has plateaued. He does have a wicked wrist shot from the high slot, and did a nice job on the penalty kill, what with quite a few short handed goals. The big question is, do we go with Horvat/Holmstrom/Drouin on line 1. And move Barzal to wing on line two with Ritchie, and dare I say palmieri?
Should have bought out 40 to make room for rittich. Drouin has the q league connection to roy having played there for halifax when roy coached remparts so there is that. Don't know what to expect from drouin since his draft status was boosted playing with mack in halifax. Cheap tier 2 ufa signing to be expected. Same with 4 re-signing. No big $$$ ufa signings for isles. To be expected.
Why everybody keep calling him a top 6 forward he’s a third line player on any decent team period, and he won’t move the needle for the islanders one way or the other
I totally agree with you Gil on all your points. It sounds like you and I are thinking the same. Darch is buying time and wants to stay competitive.The owners want them to not tank and want fannies in the seats. He is playing chess while a lot of the gm's today are overpaying ridiculous contracts and are playing checkers. Glad to see the cone of silence long gone we have the right guy for the job.

I completely agree with some of the signings are Roy signings all the way, I think.
Although I disagree with you as far as Varley is concerned, I know he's older but when he plays well, a really good back up and it's not like he gets hurt all the time. Hopefully this was a one off, but most importantly, other than his talent, it would not be saving very much. He gets paid $2.75 million and I believe he has one year left on his contract at the very most two, but I believe this is last year as I said, in my other comments, they could've saved that money by not overpaying Druonin, he's not $4 million player or probably could've and should've saved .75mil on DeAngelo give him 1 million if we are going have him back at all and even Romanov, I really like him, but would've liked to see him more in the five range instead of 6.25.
The last year he was healthy, which was the season before this very past one, he was the reason that we made the playoffs. Plus he can help the Sorkin mentally in the playoffs or if he faulters. But I certainly, again, agree with the Roy part of the comment and the Roy to some or a lot of this. to save the same amount of money a little bit more actually they should absolutely buy out Engvall even though I think he said he wasn't going to. It would be freaking pretty amazing if he could include him in a trade and not hurt the overall trade for the Islanders but I don't see that happening.

I'm really happy with Darche. Seems switched on and very smart balancing the cap moving forward while also making us younger. I think he'll be very successful and happy to be patient
I'm a bit bummed Reily is not coming back, and am also a bit disappointed that Tony D only got a one year deal. For under 2mil he should have been signed to 2 or even 3 years. basically he'll be lost to FA if he puts up 50 to 60 pts next year. We have 15 forwards now if Tysplakov signs – surely Darche is going to make a trade – Duclair and Engvall feel like untradeable dead wood. Do you believe Schaeffer should start the season in the NHL – I don’t it’s too much pressure. And he did not play a lot last year to me he needs a full season somewhere else but is the AHL a knock on his confidence?

I'm liking Darche's thinking Gilford – he's done a lot of work since taking over, its been the most exciting off-season in years. I've been saying on here for months that the Island needs a talent upgrade, and they are getting it with younger and older players – its a nice balance, keeps you competitive w/o bottoming out. NHL News called Jonathan Druin's signing top 5 best FA signings yesterday – a former TBL. I'm a huge DeAngelo fan, extending Holmstrom who is improving on a franchise friendly contract was sneaky good move. Shabanov signing next?

They also resigned Simon Hohlstrom. They also defenseman Ethan Behr with a right-handed shot. Matheiu Darche held a press conference. He said that these moves aren't rebuilding they're retooling. I get what Darche is doing…biding time. I am surprised that ownership is on board, because the ticket selling is in overdrive and UBS will not be close to capacity for the near future. I would put the following on the endangered species list: Cizikas, Lee, Pageau, Mayfield, Pelech…after the trade deadline most if not all…should be history. Signing Jonathon drouin is a good signing because there was very little left in free agency. Drouin doesn't move the needle nor is he a game changer but he does bring value. I don't see him as 1st or 2nd line forward but rather a 3rd line forward. His value is similar to kyle . With kyle you k ow if he stay healthy he will do 50pts. Drouin is similR in value.however if he plays on top line with barzal and Bo I could see him do 60pts. He brings top line speed, playmaking , good vision and iq. I could see him help barzal hit 30 goals. 2ys with 4mm aav is a good contract but big red flag is he can he stay healthy.

There is a shortage of right side D's in the league, if D'Angelo plays well expect him to be moved at the dead line. It cost us nothing to get him and if we can turn him into a draft pick in 26 it would be a nice surprise.
