It's understandable Ehlers wanted to go to a contender. He's getting up there in age and wants his name on the cup. Red Wings a still a few years out from being serious contenders. Hoping some of our youngsters make the line up with year. I think we'll see more consistency this year with Mclellan as coach. Hopefully Kasper continues to progress. He was on fire at the end of the season last year.
Yzerman tried to bring in some top free agents and probably not just this year. He wasn't even able to make a massive overpay offer because they said we are not listening to offers from Detroit because other teams offering are already in the playoffs.
There are 2 options, continue with patience, draft and develop which has been a strength Or, the wings have a plethora of picks and prospects to overpay in a trade. But they want Seider, Raymond, Kasper, Edvinsson at which point are you filling one whole by creating another? Would you want to give up one of those guys with probable less prospects coming behind?
I don't think it"s only because of combined factors of cold weather, taxes, not in playoffs currently. Detroit is still original 6, there's good young players and prospects, I think if Detroit can get into the playoffs (by building or trades) then some free agents will be open to offers. This free agency period also had more buyers than sellers with the cap going up
It's going to take some schrewd gming.
Ehlers to Carolina… why would you go there? Nothing to do there.
Let the kids play.
It's not clear how a team like Detroit could get a difference maker in a weak FA year. Have to be willing to sacrifice good assets for a trade. Its fine to say you want to grow by developing the kids in the system but if we rely on that, we will fall out of the play-off race much sooner. The year we lost by a tie breaker we did so because we were deep with veterans who could pitch in a little. That team did not involve many inexperienced players. For those who want to bring up a lot of people from GR, don't be surprised if the Wings earn a good spot in the draft.
The problem I see that the Wings have is having bad luck in the drafts when they were at the bottom. Not once did they land a 1st to 3rd pick of the draft. You look at Chicago, NJ and now San Jose they are getting multiple years of landing 1 thru 3 in the draft and your odds are higher to obtain game changers, which you can build around and bring in key veterans. Wings will have to most likely follow the St Louis Blues plan of building a contending team. Making trades out of desperation could put you in a far worse position. Then I am wondering if top players do not want to live in Michigan because of the bad rap Detroit gets in the media? Don’t see players lining up that want to play here?
The yserplan is working. 'We will build through the draft". Currently, half of the skaters are home grown draft picks. And more are on the way to POSSIBLY make the team this year. Stevey has been good at FA signings with Kane and DeBrinkat, but others have NOT been so good. The over pay, and long term contracts have prevented moving these under performing players. And it doesn't allow for the young prospects to move up and show what they can do at the NHL level. Let's not be so quick as to throw Stevey under the bus. Yeah, there have been desentors but most believe in Stevey.
Free agency 'success' is a misnomer. Most big spenders don't improve. In 2 years we could see Carter Bear, Mazur, Dmitri Buchelnikov, MBN, Anton Johansson, Nate Danielson, Axel Sandin-Pellikka, Plante,vGenborg,, and others, playing for the redwings.
