Maybe, just maybe. Shanahan's failures with the leafs was a reason they told him no.

a president of hockey ops is someone who's smart enough to have a GM who is a buffer between him and the unemployment line. he makes the calls and if they go sideways, the GM is kicked to the curb.

I would not employ Brendan Shanahan in any role. He messed up big time in Toronto because he was unable to change from his plan A. He should have allowed Kyle Dubas to trade Mich Marner before Marner's no trade clause kicked in. However, Shanahan was so wedded to the "core four" that he could not see the bigger picture. With Dubas in charge in stead of Shanahan Toronto woud be in a much better position than they are now.
