  1. The coyotes made many mistakes as an organization. Will there ever be another team in Phoenix or is it truly over for them? With all this expansion talk, who knows…

  2. Yes he did miss the playoffs all four seasons he coached, but in the history of the NHL there's certainly been worse head coaches statistically than Gretzky.

According to the NHL there's been 398 head coaches since the start in 1917-18.
Wayne had a combined point percentage of .473 in his 328 games.

Of the active head coaches, Martin St Louis (.472), Jeff Blashill (.447), André Tourigny (.447), and Ryan Warsofsky (.317) are worse in their career totals.

There's been 136 head coaches all-time that has coached 300+ games, Wayne sits at 108th spot in point %. So that's 28 head coaches with 300+ games that had worse stats than Wayne.

Wayne's point% is better than Jacques Demers who coached 1,000+ games and won a cup, and better than Frank Boucher who coached 500+ games and won a cup.

Given a little more time, Gretzky could have gone on to have success as a head coach, no doubt.

  3. I seem to remember reading that Rocket Richard had trouble with coaching when he coached Quebec in the WHA.

  4. trump told the coyotes that he would make a great coach … he even wrote a full page add supporting gretszkey for coach in the local newspaper . 😂😂

  5. a primadonna and a crook. how surprising. also he's always very unsportsmanlike when canada happens not winning.

  6. Its crazy to think best player in the history would be a bad coach. 'I used to be able to do things like these, how come the team im coaching cant?'

  7. Being a great player doesn't mean you'll be a great coach, but it does happen.

Toe Blake is perhaps the best example. He was named to the 100 best players of all time by the NHL in 2017. He also won the Cup 8 times as a coach, including his first five seasons.

And as much as people despise him for helping to popularize the trap, Jacques Lemaire did win a Stanley Cup and two Jack Adams trophies, one with the Devils and one with the Wild
