  1. This should be a pre-draft interview question 🙋. “So how do you feel about the dump and chase play?”

  2. I believe being overly regimented in one playing style makes a team’s offensive attack too predictable and handicaps its’ offensive creativity and scoring opportunities as we saw with the Canucks over the course of this season. I would like to see a hybrid offensive system that allows for the best of both playing styles based on what the defensive team is giving up from shift to shift. This would make a read and react instinct among the players integral to the team’s offensive success.

  3. this is why tocchet's system didn't work well in vancouver because none of the players had any energy left for an offensive zone attack

  4. Dump and chase works if you have intellect when doing it.

Dumping it to an area where the goalie or D can easily retrieve it is dumb

But if you dump it over Quinn Hughes’s head into the corner and send 2 guys in to crush him it works in a 7 game series, Hughes got worked by Nashville Edmonton and it worked for opposing teams

Florida beat the Oilers with a dump & chase and cycle

Good luck dancing the puck into the zone every time

Mitchkov will have a rude awakening one day and I think it’s hilarious that he doesn’t like dump and chase

  5. I 100% agree tocchet style doesn't work well with goal scorers some players can't adjust absolutely terrible style

  6. Not every d-man gets pp time. And not every forward needs to be given free reign to play his game. You don't have to have the same set of rules or structure for every player. Let your elite forwards make elite plays without any fear of offending the dump and chasers.

  7. Dump and chase is the worse. Absolutely no entertainment value and slim chances of winning

  8. Dump & chase was designed for a team with players who had little in the way of possession puck skills. It was first used successfully against Montreal in the early 1970's who was a puck possession skilled team by the New York Rangers. The intent was to tire out Montreal in the 6 game series and it worked. New York won the series.

Dump and chase works well with very well conditioned physical players. Especially the bigger player who could use their speed and weight to deliver crushing checks .
Often the less skilled team would dump it in on the weaker side defense man.

Carey Price diffused this tactic with his excellent puck handing skills as Montreal's goalie. Due to Jersey's goalie puck handling skills the league limited the area where goalies could retrieve the puck since the Devils didn't have a puck possession team.

Teams with a mixed style do well now because you don't know what's coming so the special teams become the dominant reason a team will or won't make the playoffs

  9. Michkov is preaching to the choir. Dump and chase hockey is boring, and kills the momentum of the game. I wish more players would use their skill to open up the game, and create excitement.

  10. As a Flyers fan I totally agree with him… It hasn't worked in 50 friggin years so why would it start now!?!

  11. As a Blues fan, I can tell You, their Heavy game is pretty similar to that of the Rick Toccet, style of play…In the Logan Mailloux trade, I've read that it was Kyrou that was the Blues bargaining chip on that trade…I'm sure Montreal was going to have to surrender more assets, but I'm assuming cap issues came into play, and that's when a one for one involving Bolduc, finalized the deal…With that said, Bolduc plays a much more aggressive, physical style of play, as opposed to Kyrou…However, where I personally favor Bolduc's physical style, when you have players such as Michkov & Zegras, who their style of play more so resembles that of a Kyrou, it is entirely possible to get maximum potential out of their abilities, with the Heavy Game style of play…I don't know how fair it is to other players, who are doing the grinding and punishing themselves physically, while You have a free floating skater on the ice, but if the lines hosting a 2 out of 3 " go getters", accept that role, and the points are going up on the board, then hats off to the Coach for getting those types of lines to buy in on that philosophy.
It looks like Kyrou will play with Holloway on the opposing wing and Suter at Center, there You have two "go getters" in Holloway and Suter, and a floater in Kyrou…Last year Holloway put up 26 goals, working in tandem with Kyrou, with Schenn at Center…The system has its advantages, but if the Coach doesn't identify, the strengths and weaknesses of each player, and get them to buy in on the greater of the good, it'll never pan out, and productivity will be lost, resulting in dissension amongst the line…The Blues had issues under Berube, with Kyrou's style, it ran over into Banister's brief outing, however, Montgomery seemed to understand it, and make it work rather well…
Toccet has his homework to do, especially being one is a 2nd year player, and the other was recently traded for.

  12. This is the kind of thing that shows why he wasn’t drafted higher.
    Huge red flag …

Glad the habs took Reinbacher and where able to get Demidov the following year .

Talent isn’t everything , attitude and ego also play a huge part .

  13. DIDN’T WANT TO READ: You reposted this on purpose to get reaction out of people.

While Rick Tocchet's coaching style is often described as emphasizing effort, physicality, and a strong forecheck, it's not accurate to label him solely as a "dump and chase" coach. His systems are more nuanced, blending physical play with smart positioning and tactical thought. He aims to create offense through hard work and puck possession, rather than relying solely on skill.

  14. ideally ya, of course it’s best to gain the blue line with possession, but sometimes in the moment it’s the smart play.. gotta play both..

  15. Now we know why Montreal passed on drafting him, they may have a problem with him following how the team wants to play.

  16. I’m pretty sure every hockey fan over the age of 50 agrees with Michkov. Before coaches like Jacques Lemaire began using the neutral zone trap defense in the mid 80’s, there was no such thing as dump and chase. I can understand the third and fourth lines might dump and chase as 3rd and especially 4th liners are usually less talented offensively(especially in a 32 team league with a talent pool that’s stretched thin) but asking your 1st and 2nd liners to play that way seems to me to be a waste of talent and makes for hockey that is boring af to watch.
