Pittsburgh is the Chicago of the 20teens. Chicago had a good run with a core group, signed them long term, and then everyone aged out/got hurt/etc. Now they are in a rebuild. Pittsburgh did the same….had a great run, great core, signed to extensions. Now it's rebuild mode. The difference is that Pittsburgh veterans actually still produce (Crosby, Malkin, Letang), but don't want to leave. They are obviously hoping for McKenna at #1 next year but the problem is that the vets are gonna be putting up points and they won't have a shot. Pittsburgh is looking to move Rackell and Rust…for draft picks that won't arrive in the next 5 years? Crosby and Letang aren't interested in that plan. Malkin is gone after this season, back to Russia, but will put up 30. Pitt screwed up this draft with Kindel at #11, could have gotten him at probably 20+. They could have gotten a Letang replacement in a couple years in Jackson Smith, or grabbed Bear or Eklund. Pittsburgh drafting has been the worst. How that GM still has a job is insane. Zonnon and Horcroff at 22 & 24?!? WTF?!? God knows that team needs a goalie, so they pass on Ravensbergen? They pass on Brzustewicz and Fiddler? Pittsburgh needs PROSPECTS not PROJECTS. The worst drafting team in the last 10 years for sure

Fyi Mike, Lane Hutson won’t be eligible for an offer sheet (same for Demidov). Can’t be offersheeted if you haven’t played a minimum of 3 seasons (1 season = minimum of 10 games played, regular or playoffs).

Mike, I really don't understand this whole "tank for McKenna " thing. I mean, the worst team still only has about a 30% chance to get the first pick, correct? (I'm probably off with the %) so even if a team spends an entire season trying to tank they may not get him. Look at this past year. Now, in Pitts case, they'll finish somewhere between 4th worst and 8th or so. They're in the lottery. Now, if they trade Karlsson, Rakell, and Rust, and they receive 1st's for them it'll most likely be from better teams, ie finishing 20th-32nd and there's talent there too! But that won't be in the lottery for McKenna. Would I like to see McKenna drafted by Pitt, ABSOLUTELY!!! But again, you can't tank for him just improve odds.

Could someone clarify the LTIR situation for me.
I know teams can be 10% over the cap in the off season.
Equally after the season has started a player like Tkachuk can be placed on LTIR.
How does that square with opening night roster declaration I thought that couldn't include LTIR
