You missed a dark horse for retirement. #Retire16
Retiring 91 on the night they play the Hurricanes… an Ilitch never forgets…
Why isn't #30 retired ???
I have a Sergei Fedorov picture on Kodak paper of Sergei in his Russian hockey uniform. I bet not many people have that. I have had it for years.
THE WIZZARD OF "OV" About Time
A bought damn time
Fedorov is a red wings legend. This was long overdue. 🐙🐙🐙🐙. #91 forever.
This might also help in recruitment for the wings. Potential ufa's or trades might notice the ownership respect? 91 should already have been ip there.
It has nothing to do with the current team. Even if you think Stevie is a bad GM he's always been a great Captain and a very classy guy. There is NO question about that.
Chris Osgood should be next and he needs to get into the Hockey Hall of Fame already. It’s been WAY TOO LONG COMING!
Draper D-Mac Holmstrom
Pick a number… i will, it’s #3. If you watched it live, you’ll know two things. Fedorov was better than both Yzerman and Lidstrom during the dynasty run. Fedorov also “saved himself” for the playoffs while other players would burn themselves.
Considering the totality of their careers in Red and White, Howe and Yzerman are the only players with superior careers.
Zetterberg isn’t a lock but he benefits from having a high number. Datsyuk was a step above Z consistently.
Larkin even being in a jersey retirement conversation is hilarious. 😂
Who’s next? Slava Kozlov? Jiri Hudler?
when i saw dabrincat wasnt on the list, i figured maybe he didnt want to.
This could remove the curse!!
There are multiple HHF players with cups that the Habs have Not retired….
And none to this point that are not both ….
Several years ago, I wrote to the Wings public relations or communications personnel about having Sergei's (Fedorov) jersey retired, and told them that the Illitch family, specifically Mike Illitch, needs to have it done for Detroit's fans. As a native Detroiter who never really looked back after I left the Detroit Metro area in 1987 for the scorching AZ heat, I missed the experience of sharing the highs and the lows arguably with the best fans in America. When a Detroit sports team is doing well, you could see the pride that their fans, especially native Detroiters fans, have for their teams. After the Iron Curtain came down in Europe, during the late 1980s, the Wings were the only organization in the NHL that believed in winning talent and invested in Russia's best hockey talent, along side a spattering of Swedish talent like Nick Lindstrom. The rest is history, with the Wings shining better than any of their counterparts, reaching the playoffs every year for more than 2 decades. I had to leave the Motor City at that time in my early to mid 20s, joyfully experiencing the Tigers winning it all in 1984 (I was rather young and not tuned into their World Series win in 1968). Before I left, the Pistons made it close to getting to the NBA finals and then losing in the NBA Finals a couple of times, but then won back to back championships with Isaiah, Laimbeer, Rodman, The Microwave, John Salley, and I know I'm missing at least one name from that group (a soft spoken guard) that was the key to winning after I left in 1987. The Lions had their moments with Billy Sims and and Barry Sanders back in the day, but still no cigar, and now the Lions are so close to getting a whiff of a hopeful trip to the Super Bowl some day soon, hopefully putting to rest the hex and curse that's plagued the organization since the 1960s. I had to wait and leave Motown to experience the Wings even playing competitive hockey, prior to winning 4 Stanley Cups between '97 and 2008. What a run that was, and Sergei (Fedorov) and the rest of the Russian 5 were key to shutting down rivals like the Montreal Canadiens who we, as Wings fans, couldn't stand to regurgitate their winning ways and all the Stanley Cups they claimed with the Larry Robinson's, Guy Lafleur's, the Sergei Savard's, and the Ken Dryden's of the hockey world. The Canadiens, aka: Canucks (as we referred to them in derogatory fashion) during the 1970s and 1980s, seemed to get all those great hockey players on their club, and seemed like it would never stop. However, the Wings delivered a 😂coup de gras, with the Russian 5, to the Canadiens during the mid 1990s when our beloved team demoralized and put the kabash on the Canadiens, scoring repeatedly on net and shaming Montreal's hockey players with Patrick Roy in goal just prior to Roy being pulled by the Canadiens' coaching staff; what then followed was Patrick Roy's lecture to the Canadiens' coaching staff telling them that he would no longer play for the Canadiens—- this taking place in front of a packed house on Montreal's home ice. What a Kodak moment that was. And Sergei Fedorov and the rest of the Russian 5, from that day forth, was taken seriously by the best NHL teams across the league for dismantling a Montreal Canadiens hockey team that had dominated the sport in North America….. Hats off to a Wings' superstar, Sergei (Fedorov), the best hockey player of his time, and the only NHL player in history to score 5 goals in one game. God bless Sergei (Fedorov) and his family for supporting him his whole career.
And after Sergei (Fedorov), the Wings organization needs to retire Brendan Shanihan's number (14) as well, after Sergei's number (91) gets retired in Jan 2026. Chris Osgood's number (30) needs to be retired as well, followed by Pavel Datsyuk (13) and Zetterburg (40). Let's go, Chris Illitch! Do the right thing— for the fans…
91 minutes standing ovation. He deserves it. He is one the hardest working Red Wings of all times on both ends of the ice. Epitome of Michigan work ethic.
Sergei Fedorov was the best skater ever!
❤🐙 91 🐙❤
Definition of Selke and Hart. OhhhhhPeeeee
Now add him back to the organization in some capacity!
Lane Hudson is so overrated
#Retire93 !!!🐈🐈🐈
I feel like Osgood maybe someday could be up there
I think Homer could get some number retirement consideration. Lifelong wing of 15 years and 1000+ games. 4 cups. Fan favorite. I just don’t think his stats will be enough to get him there. I love that the wings have a high bar for number retirement though, makes it feel like a bigger deal when it happens
I remember an interview about Fedorov being such a good overall hockey (during the time he played some defense). I don’t remember for sure but it sounded like a Shanny answer. They were asked if there was a position Fedorov couldn’t play. They answered, “Goalie, maybe?” I was cracking up.
1. Howe
2. Yzerman
3. Federov
4. Lidstrom
5. Delvechio
Long overdue
Actually the snub would be the ducks
It's the number not the sweater
As far as retiring jerseys, I was trying to think of players who were on the team forever and won cups, and also numbers that i haven't seen. There's drapers 33, Kronwalls 55, zetterbergs 40, datsyuks 13, and osgoods 30. Obviously konstantinovs 16. Is 16 in the rafters at LCA? I haven't been to a game since the Joe. I'd put that up there with Believe on it. Hey hey hockey town after we score would be awesome, bring back Al the octopus coming down from the ceiling, bring back the old lady in the crowd knitting at every game lol. As far as vibes go I hope it helps the team. It really would be a bummer with all this cool stuff happening this season if the wings end up missing the playoffs again.
The curse has been broken
Vladdy's #16 should be next.
