  1. I would hit the under on this one. I think they are going to tear this team down and sell it for the spare parts.

  2. You can see the hate for dubas in Adams eyes when talking, its strange energy. Pens will do okay this year. Also they didnt mention anything about goalie prospects.

  3. Aquiring Ryan Graves, Karlsson, not trading Malkin, Letang, Rust, Jarry, but trading Guentzel and Petterson… Dubas has not done a good job

  4. Considering Dubas has shown how bad he is at his job, I'd hit that under if I was a gambling man – and assume they'll finish last in the division.

  5. Steve… Silovs was "very solid" for the Canucks? Dude, you don't have to say "I don't know – I didn't watch them" but you can, it's totally acceptable… but come on, 3.65 GAA and an 86.1% save percentage, 2-6-1 record. He was good for Abbotsford (heck they won the Calder) but he was bad at the NHL level.

  6. I think Jesse is being Naive believing the pens can turn around on a dime in one year. No one wants to go to Pittsburgh even if it is to play with Sid. Maybe they'd sign like a one year to deal to get a single season with Sid in but even then I doubt it. They'd have to win the draft lottery, draft Mckenna and hire someone who can mind control players into thinking pittsburgh is a good place to be right now. They cannot be a good team next season. Next season mind you is another year of growth for the young atlantic teams, I don't imagine the Leafs, Panthers or Lightning are going anywhere, Columbus will be better, New Jersey is still young and improving, who knows what will happen with the rangers, Carolina will still be behemoths, The Capitals still have a quality roster and some young upcoming pieces. There is no room for the penguins to be good. Even if somehow they did manage to sign a bunch of free agents (which may i remind you, no good teams are ever built in free agency, see Nashville last year), they're not just going to magically gel and over take these other eastern teams for a playoff spot. They need to sell everything they can, pray they get Mckenna and go from there. And don't tell me you think they'd make hockey trades for these guys, everyone is trying to get better. No one wants to trade roster players right now. Even if they keep everyone and add a Panarin, everyone is getting older, deteriorating, they still need goaltending, they need defensemen, which the free agent class isnt as swimming in as it is forwards, and with the age of these guys you what, buy yourself 2 years? maybe 3? of most likely first round exits? whats the use? Just sell and rebuild and byu 2030 you're a powerhouse again behind a generational center.

They can be good quick, but not next year quick. If they draft Mckenna, acquire hopefully 2 more first rounders next year, ideally use them to trade up and get another blue chip guy, maybe add some prospects in the fire sale, Mckenna can turn them around within 3-4 years not unlike the Canadiens rebuild. They have some decent prospects already, Mcgroarty, Kindel, Zannon, Horcoff.. They can turn it around with some speed but they need to sell. Everyone is dying for a 2C and the Pens have two great options. If Sid wants to pick his spot and its Montreal, they have a ton of draft capital and prospects to move. If Malkin wants to pick a spot, Florida only has a 1st in 2028 but they might not be the same giant they are now, then. They also have 2nd rounders and maybe you could get a young roster player for them for the salary to work with Malkin. The Pens can do a quick rebuild, but they cannot just retool in free agency and be good next year. That's comical in my eyes.

  7. The Pens can try turning it around all they want, they got to beat the young Hurricanes, young Capitals and young Devils to even have a shot at the playoffs … the Atlantic is just that stupidly stacked.

Acquiring Karlsson was a massive failure from day 1, there was simply 0 need at the time with Letang still around together they were redundant, trading him away is necessary for a rebuild and for one last shot at the playoffs, he costs way too much for what he brings.

That being said, if Pittsburgh retains a big portion of his contract, he might become an interesting piece for a contender like Jones was for the Panthers, especially if an important D gets injured long term.

  8. None of these guys really do any research into any team that they cover (unsurprising), so it's weird that they don't really mention any of the talent that's joining the team. They didn't trade Rust/Rakell AND they have Koivunen/McGroarty joining the team. On top of that, they're having a really impressive camp under their new coach with a lot of interesting storylines.

As a non-leafs fan, I really gravitated towards SDPN because the three of you really seemed like people who put the work in to talk about the sport. Full stop, just stop making these season previews if you're only going to take a lazy, holistic look into any given team. Pittsburgh is not the first one I've seen thus far where you've been completely off the mark.

  9. As an NHL fan and not a Pens fan, I am torn on the whole Crosby situation. If I were the Pens I would give Crosby two options.
    1) trade him to the team he wants to and tear down the rest of the roster.
    2) Tear down the team and bring in a bunch of prospects and draft picks and keep Crosby around to teach the next era of penguins and maybe keep Crosby around in the organization if he wants to.

  10. Adam needs to stop repeating the thing about Geno being confirmed to be his last year. That article got debunked literally the same day by Dubas. And he has since gone on record saying that him and Geno/his agent will talk after the Olympics and figure out what happens then.

  11. I think the Penguins are going to enter into the McKenna sweepstakes. Crosby is coming to the end of his career. So just like the Pens got Crosby at the tail end of Mario's career, I could see them getting McKenna for the end of Crosby's.
