Trading Silovs was a big mistake but Canucks aren't known for intelligent moves though.
The centennial jerseys looked really great, but that's about all the Rangers had going for them.
Silovs has one of the highest ceilings I’ve ever seen from a goalie. His playoffs series vs Edmonton two seasons ago showed how good he can be. I know Pittsburgh isn’t the first (or the 16th) team that comes to mind when you think of a contender, but hot damn. I wasn’t really impressed with their play, but they forced a lot of turnovers and had great coverage of the net front. Maybe the Rangers really are piss weak.
If Silovs can just make the saves he needs to make, the Pens could surprise us. But yeah, one game sample size, and the Rangers looked really bad. Like terrible. Like if it weren’t for Igor, the Rangers would have gotten loaded. And going for two empty nets in succession when the first one went so well, that was just a brilliant idea. Game one was a brown note for the Rangers, and I fear that the worst is yet to come for them.
Kindel is going to be a very special player.

I think it was a classy move to give him oportunity to be a starter in NHL by moving him to Penguins as he would never get the chance as a Cannuck.

Zibanejad and Lafrenière were the only two Rangers skaters that seemed to know it wasn't a preseason game.
I was in the crowd for last year's opener, when the Rags beat the Pens 6-0 and Jarry let in the first shot on goal of the season. I had to sit there behind him and watch this goalie stand there with a .000 save percentage.

These teams should trade with each other next summer… Zibanejad (4 more years) for Jarry (2 more years) and Graves (3 more years). Rangers could use the open winger slot for a kid, and despite the cap balancing out now, the money disappears sooner with Jarry and Graves. Penguins could use Zibanejad in their top 6 or top 9 with Malkin retiring soon, Crosby after that, one or both of Rakell and Rust getting traded eventually, etc.
Its one game, but it may be a long season for the Rangers

The Entire 1st period of this game on ESPN had tbe worst audio mixing I've ever heard in a pro sport, I couldn't hear a word of what the announcers were saying over the noise in the arena.

The biggest thing about the game, and both local radios hammered this home, is that the Penguins looked loose. And that's probably the best thing for this roster.
It's the same core faces as the last few years, but with a mostly new supporting cast of young guys and journeymen who are looking to carve out their spots in the NHL. I think a bit of Major League energy is in this Penguins team. They aren't going to go far, if anywhere, should they luck into a wild card, but they're loose enough to make other teams sweat.
I dont recommend taking a shot every time the espn announcers mentioned the age of the veterans every time they touched the puck.
As a Canucks fan, I'm happy for Arty. Logistically and practically, he wasn't staying here over Lankinen or Demko if they're both healthy, and they were going to lose him for nothing in that case. They did what they had to do. It was kind of a similar situation to when the San Jose Sharks basically got very little for Christian Ehrhoff when they sent him to Vancouver because of Cap constraints. They weren't going to be able to keep him anyway, so I guess, at least they got something. The pick the Canucks got may not amount to anything, but every draft pick is a lottery ticket and you never really know until at least several years down the road what you're going to get. Silovs' record in Vancouver at the NHL level had been somewhat spotty (granted, during a tumultuous period and an iffy defense) and despite his Calder Cup win, nobody really knew what to expect from him. If healthy, the tandem the Canucks have was and is more of a sure thing. It's just health that is the issue. In any case, I'm happy for Arty. I don't know if this Party lasts the whole season and he remains the starter all year, but the Rangers aren't a slouch by any means and he shut them out in Game 1. That's something.
Rangers looked more energized trying to get roster spots amongst themselves in preseason..find a lackluster theme already.
