Great first game!!!!!!
I was wrong!!!! And I am happy about that. As someone who watches ALL NHL games I was not sure about Ehlers. Ehlers (My nickname when I played along with Eals) had one of the best games I have ever seen him play. Looks like a new guy out there.
TOP LINE- looked very good and got better as the game went on. Aho had a jump you don't see from him to start the season as he is a slow starter. Jarvis built a game as he was off a bit to start.
SECOND LINE- looked very good but…. I have to say it- Stankhoven is not as dynamic at 2C as he is on the wing. Svech and Blake looked very hungry and strong on the puck.
THIRD LINE- *THIS IS YOUR 4TH LINE!!!!!* Staal looked old and slow as he normally does to start the season. Carrier and Marty looked strong but that KK line looked like a true third line. Something the Canes have not had in a long time. They have had 4A and 4B.
FOURTH LINE- *THIS SHOULD BE THE REAL/TRUE THIRD LINE** Great line. This is what a third line is supposed to look like! KK did great. Some of those face off losses were by design. I have seen them work on this at camp. KK pushes the puck or opposing centers stick and puck forward and Robinson explodes towards where the puck should go. They did it twice last night and the first time resulted in the first goal. I love this line.
DEFENSE- Second wrong. The third D-pair looked good. I am still concerned moving forward but Ghost looked responsible but still offensively explosive. Nikishin was great. Looked very comfortable and started to move offensively like he did in the KHL. He is starting to feel it.
Miller/Chatty combo is going to be known around the league!!!!! It was uncomfortable to start but by the end of the first was already impressing. So fast! Chatty built his game while being strong defensively. Great stick work. PLEASE REMOVE THE REINS ON CHATTY!!! When he takes the puck up ice he gives me flashbacks of Brian Leech in his prime. But you can see him rein it in and passes the puck. I would love to see him lower that shoulder and take to the house.
Slavin and Walker are going to be another top first pair in the league.
As a power skating coach this D-Core is going to give other teams a lot of problems!!!! This D-Core is fast!!!!!
GOALTENDING- Freddy was solid. Maybe one goal he would like to have back but also stole a couple that should have gone it.
GOAL POST- Devils star of the game!!!
PP looked good. Would still like to see more net front but…. Svech was there most of the PP. I hate it when they bump out to the side of the net. It allows the goalie to see the puck. However that did not matter on the Miller PP goal!!!
PK- The PK was the PK! Great job again!
Great first game. This was the Canes game all night. Just some sloppy play here and there.
Exciting opening night. Loved watching Ehlers and Stankoven on the puck!
K'Andre Miller was awesome last night – and it had nothing to do with the goals or amount of shifts he played. The goals are nice, but I liked his game defensively – when he is on the ice, he's like a giant on skates, and he moves so well. And he brings some physicality. Things like this are what stand out to me, not the stat sheet reads.
Seth Jarvis – he was great in the 3rd. As Tripp Tracy would say, I thought he 'built a game'. Defensively he didn't get back on his guy on one of the Devils goals earlier in the game. All that to say, the dude just shows up when it matters. Again, I get that goals are what determine wins and losses on the scoreboard, but the stat reads aren't really what I am dying to hear in a recap – I can read that on ESPN.
I thought Aho, Nikishin, Slavin, Hall, Ghost and Ehlers all had solid nights as well – Aho was involved in 2 goals, Nikishin I think played a smart, simple game defensively, Slavin was being Slavin with his stick work, and the others all had good impact on lines/pairs they played on – with or without stat sheet stuffers. Specifically Nikishin – I liked the way he remained responsible defensively when Ghost pinched and I also liked his decision to hold onto the puck to set up one of our goals. He didn't get a stat for EITHER of those plays (except in the +/- column), but those plays were noticeable.
I'd like to point out that Sean Walker is a bit of a concern for me on that top pair currently. I also think Jackson Blake and Taylor Hall could flip flop spots potentially, bringing my final line combinations that I mentioned a month and a half ago (on another Locked On video) to fruition:
1 – Ehlers-Aho-Jarvis
2 – Svech-Stank-Hall
3a – Robinson-KK-Blake
3b – Carrier-Staal-Martinook
I felt the KK line played well throughout, even though the face-off circle wasn't great for KK. I'd like to point out that I think that two of those face-off losses turned into goals for us – almost like a designed face-off loss to get Robinson to hound the puck.
Overall, a solid game one for us. Eighty-one more until playoff hockey.
Zach ,They got that big Puckline Victory ! And it felt great to watch all the pieces fall in place⚠️Take Warning ⚠️ LETS GO CANES🌀
As a Pred, I am jealous regarding Jarvis. What an engine, always present. I'd love to steal him. Josi feeding pucks into a line including Jarvis is a wet fantasy. The other team would simply be steamrolled.
Great start on the season, boys, you still look damned good, albeit lots of work to be done, still
