I've seen some of the commentary that Rielly is back in prime form, that he's the key to the Leafs defence, etc. And I just don't see it. Maybe this is my bias from years of watching terrible efforts from him. But all I see are his errors allowing goals again and again.

Morgan Rielly, been saying for many years that he's been the root problem. He's been a negative player on a top team, which is really hard to do. Always keep trying to find him a D partner, it's not his partners fault ….. it's him! Nylander, i get it people love him because he gets alot of break aways, there's a reason why he gets alot of breakaways and he's weak at pretty much everything else forecheck, backcheck, hitting, d-zone coverage, blocking shots, etc, etc. Many people blame Mitch for everything and I will never understand it, when he was the most complete player they had. For some reason these 2(Mo & Nylander) get free passes, don't get it.
Steve, you need to be on the next Winged Wheel Podcast to cover this game from a die hard Leafs prospective.

Well things kinda even out at the end, I mean they won on a lucky break against Montreal and it came back in this one.

It looks like whatever injury was affecting Matthews shot last year is still affecting his shot, still above average but not like it was 2 years ago, not even close
It also looks like they have already tuned out Berube, he does have a short shelf life, but I thought they tuned him out last year in the playoffs

PP, float. Coaches chasing Seguin swap.. CF%, puck control, grabems… Rasmus Ristolainen rumoured the first choice to complete a 6 defender group – could probably get the job done. Trade incoming (Philadelphia, Vegas?) is it a perfect chart? Vegas trade could learn to score 41+? Knies 41+? McMann 41+? Montreal trade? 30+ could score 41+? (finish the wings for 1k goals) Leaves science guy to copy and paste MacKinnon, 2 grabems. Puck control, penalty kill group… 6 defenders.. .. 🎉

Wings fan here. Leading up to the 1st game, I watched the last 5-6 playoff elimination videos by Steve to get ready for the season. After our season opener, I thought we wouldn't even win 1 against the Leafs. Feels good.

I don't want to bring up Marner, he's no longer a Leaf and doesn't matter. But you can't get rid of Marner and then claim the DNA has changed. Everyone else (who matters) is still there and still the same as they've always been. Reilly is the same, Nylander is the same, Matthews is the same. Going to take a lot more to change the culture and the attitude and the habits of this team.
As a die hard leafs fan, I have to sadly say that 34 does not have what it takes to lead this team. Also, one good game for Rielly does not make a good player. In fact, unless they somehow they get rid of him, we will always have questionable defense. His occasional offense does not make up for his perpetual bone headed plays on defense. I cringe every time I see him defending.
