Emmitt Finnie being the first winger out in OT, playing a full OT shift w Larkin, while Kane was 3rd winger out, playing a throwaway shift w Compher, is indefensible. Just disgusting deliberate over the top disrespect that cannot have played well in the locker room.
Emmitt Finnie besides being a recent 7th round pick who had 5 points in 16 AHL games last year, has been awful this season analytically, in the play. Just awful. 40ish % on everything at 5v5. And was awful tonight, and got caved in the entire 3rd period. Kane has been really good analytically all season and his line once again held their own tonight even during the barrage in the 3rd.
3v3 OT is your best vs their best. No line matchups. You play your centers in order. You play your wingers in order. You play your d-men in order. It is hierarchical. Emmitt Finnie is not the team's best winger. He is the 8th best winger the Wings had out there tonight. When Raymond is out, DeBrincat and Kane are so far ahead of the other 6 wingers that there isn't even a discussion. They are 1 and 2, in whatever order. Emmitt Finnie does not factor in to this discussion.
There is no defending or justifying this. This kid did not earn that. He has done nothing to earn that. He's already gotten way more than he earned. Just how much more is he entitled to bc he played hard for a week in practice in September? And of course he was bad in OT, bc he had no business being there.
When Raymond is back, is Kane just out of the OT lineup altogether? What an insane decision. They literally led off the OT period w a Kane OT goal montage, including 2 under McLellan. Did they ask Larkin who he'd rather play with in 3v3? He isn't saying Finnie, I'll tell you that.
We saw multiple long winning streaks last year after Todd took over. I hope we can be consistent between the streaks.
Gibson has the eyes of a gunfighter. Sure, he'll run the range working cattle, but mess with him and he'll say something like "I'm your huckleberry" and it'll be over fast.
Okay media folks (Helen!) no more "did they surprise you the way the kids played" kinda questions. He's the $#&ing coach–he literally decides who plays and who sits. You think he's surprised? He expects it out of them because he knows they are capable. Great team win though. Gibby was solid when he had to be and the team got in front of a lot of pucks. Larkin in OT is icing on the cake.
