I feel like it's easier in hindsight, but the Avs weren't making headway in the Rantanen negotiations, and the risk was too high of just letting him walk for nothing at all. I also think like, right now, we all know how much the cap is going to go up, which we didn't know at the time of the Rantanen trade. The decision to trade Rantanen for Necas was the right decision, given the information available at the time. Also, maybe a bit of an unpopular opinion, but we'd tried a couple more runs with the same guys at the top, and it wasn't working… the window is now, and something needed to change.
ppl seem to leave out we got drury with that trade to ,and u seen now much rather have both of then instead of mikko . and dont kid ur selfs mikko wanted 14 mil he has the same agent as draisitel .marty at 8×11.5 is gonna turn into a steal anyway u look at it .
Not a fair question because Mikko was reportedly asking for 14…but Necas for me because of this reality
Necas is plus 7 and Mikko is -1.
For the Avs – I take necas. My reason is the mikko/mac/makar trio was going stale and teams had them figured out. Mikko was not a big factor in the previous playoffs – Chu was. Making a change was the right thing to do and we’re already seeing larger set of zone entry/rush options that use Mac in unpredictable ways. Now, looking forward, we’re already seeing MAC start to slow down and become more of a center ice player. In two years Marty’s speed will ensure we can continue to play avalanche hockey and Mac can take on more of a Mikko role. Also, we’re seeing how important creativity is becoming league wide and Marty is far more creative than mikko.
Historically, mikko is other worldly. Marty is the future.
